Learner driver insurance quote £1750

Tried confused.com, insuresupermarket and getting £2400. Lloyds TSB is giving me £1750 less £74 from topcashback (thanks grumbler). The car's a Renault Clio Grand 1.2 'S' reg and my sons 17, and thats with his dad as a named driver. Anyone know if I can do any better?

  • you can get a lower price by making your son the named driver and yourself or your partner as the policy holder.....

personally i'd do that at least until he's passed his test -by which time i reckon his own policy will cost in the region of £800-£1000

But the car will be registered to him, not sure if I can do that and also he needs to build NCD of his own, this is all a bit complicated now.
  • I would suggest putting him as a named driver as Im 22 and have been on my Mum/Dad's insurance for the last two years - Its only this year I have taken out my own insurance as a reasonable cost of £400 (fully comp).

Although I think that does mean that you will have to register the car in your name rather than your sons??
  • Note, that my insurance company actually took into consideration (and reduced the quote) due to the fact that I had been driving on my parents insurance.

Also there are policies that your son could take out a few years down the line that allow you to claim a years worth of no claims in 9-10mths (at an addional cost, I think)

Direct Line now allow named drivers to build up no claims bonus in their own right. So it may be worth Dad having a Direct Line policy with son as named driver so that son's own quote will be cheaper in future due to the NCB?

  • I was a named driver on my parent's insurance when I was learning - they were with the CSMA and the cost of putting both me and my twin sister on it as well was only about £50 extra for the year! That was afew years ago now though!

Totally, although I have only had my own insurance policy for a year, I have already got 3 years no claims (2 years whilst a named driver and 1 year of my own)
