Electron Card :-( This will be my reason for closing the account in 2 months time ;-) I must admit I haven't actually looked to see where I can & can't use the card, but from the number of 'VISA Electron YUK!' threads on here it sounds like my Amex seems to be more widely accepted.
  • Neither. Didn't request a card, the revenge £100 will do nicely. Managed to stuff them at last after a 40 year wait.
I also intend to keep the account active with £1 and transfer a couple of pounds each month, in and out, to ensure they have to send a regular statement. :D
  • I've received a letter which says I'm getting a Connect card. What's that?

(And why am I even interested, given that the account will never be used past the second month!)

I think Connect is Barclay's term for VISA Delta, and can be used as cheque guarantee card and for shopping on the web, as well as at ATMs and in shops. It also lets you withdraw more than your balance. The Electron is much more limited, e.g. cannot be used for Internet purchases.

    Barclays debit cards

I have little intention myself to use this card (in fact, it's already been cut in two) but am nonetheless interested in finding out what Barclays think makes a great current account. We have only got a very small sample so far, but looks the majority got the basically useless Electron.

Connect card is basicaly a glorified current account interest is something like 0.1% but it has its uses online you can change it to a open plan account and set up 5 or possibly 10 saving pots .. still not muck interest though juts a basick money shuffleing tool.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Well, you could use it to draw out your tax-free-100-pound-bonus in hot little notes! (Or am I being optimistic...?)

I have received two Electron cards, as well as the £100 BEFORE depositing any money. I hope I get another £100 and maybe a third for the second card. My first £1000 has been in and £999 out! Barclays do not have a clue.

Neither of us asked for a card. Both applications were basically the same. OH got a connect card, I got nothing.

Barclays must have some sense considering that they turned in a £5.2bn profit last week.

What happened here was clearly an error for Barclays, which is why they withdrew the £100 offer so quickly. But with their recent high profile media campaign (£50 off car/home insurance, 10% regular savings account etc.) I think Barclays is finally waking up to the idea that they need to offer customers more than the 0.1% they offer on their current account, for example. I expect to see more market leading deals from Barclays with the usual strings attached, of course!
