flight to canada question?

Hi we are going to canada next week (banff):j we have never been before and i was wondering if we wear our snow boots on the flight like we did when we went to lapland last year, just this is a long flight with boots on:confused:, also any other advice on banff would be appreciated (things to do and see with children who don't fancy skiing:eek: ) thanks for any info guys.

  • I take my footwear off on a long flight anyway - Banff is what, 9hrs? I've worn hiking boots onto many a long-haul flight for the sake of not having to put them in my luggage, but then take them off anyway so it doesn't really matter what you wear on your feet :)

    Have a brilliant time :)

I am not sure on the snow boots. Depends, when you get there how are you getting from the airport to wherever you are staying?

If you are just going to be getting strait into a taxi/ shuttle I would not bother wearing them if you can fit them in your case.

When I went to Toronto a few years ago it was very cold, about -10c every day (then add wind chill on that) When we were sitting in the airport waiting for our flight I saw people getting off a flight. It was probably from somewhere hot as nearly everyone was in t-shirt and shorts. Even just dashing out to a taxi would be very very cold. So make sure you have something to keep you warm if you need it. Without having to pull it out of your case in the middle of an airport.

Hope that is of some help!

I'm assuming you're landing in Calgary, if so then you'll be fine with regular shoes on until you get to Banff. The roads etc will be clear of snow. You'd be dead uncomfortable with snow boots on the plane for that long. Banff is amazing, been skiing there a few times. You'll have a fabulous time.

i agree with the others above ref the boots, wait till you get into banff, i

ts lovely there, very picturesque, i am going again this summer, if you want to do any organised trips, would really recommend discover banff tours, they provide a great service, and also there is a great fondeu resturant (the name escapes me at the moment, i think its the grizzly bear or something like thats) try it at least once, their food is to die for (especially the cheese fondeu and choc fondeu!!

a trip to lake louise and morraine lake is recommended and the glacier if its open (not sure what time it reopenes) keep an eye out for the wildlife as well, its great!

and the shops on banff are really nice little shops all down banff avenue and the side streets off it

and i would also recommend a day in calgary as well, good shopping, unusual city though, look out for all the really osbcure public arts and models, especially of cattle lol! and the veiws from the calgary tower are nice as well

    no problem, glad to help

these are some links i have book markedd you may want to look at ref banff etc

the town itself is really easy to navigate around, theres also quite a few galleries and museums, the native indian musuem is quite good, and not that expensive, there is also the cave and basin museum, the hot springs pool (which is gorgeus being in that hot water with the cold around you etc) then there is quite a few horse riding stable which depending on season, do horse drawn tours, riding tours etc, and there is a place in a neighbouring town, canmore i think, called snowy owl and its a husky centre where you can go on husky pulled sleds etc

  • You can take the ski bus to Lake Louise C$15 return (or free with a tri-area ski pass) then there is a free bus over to Lake Louise Fairmont which is right by the lake.

There is a small museum in Banff by the river bridge with a good display of stuffed local animals (victorian era) which is interesting for kids and good for a couple of hours.

Banff Gondola gives fantastic 360 degree views and has a cafe at the summit.

Hope the temperature is a bit higher for you than when we were there in December -35 degrees centigrade! We were glad to have some of our ski gear including boots with us when we got there. If you do wear them just take them off and have an extra pair of socks to put on when you are on the plane.

Loads of good resturants including a Greek resturant with a belly dancer and plate smashing once a week. Some of the pubs don't allow kids in, this seems to be if they have slot machines.

Hope the exchange rate is better for you as it has dropped quite a bit in the last week we found eating out quite a bit more expensive than when we were there about 4 years ago.

thanks monkeyspanner will definately give the museum a go will also do the bus (thanks for the tip) will give the gondola a miss myself but hubby may take the children on, we haven't hired a car but might once we get there will just see how things go, wow -25 just told the children and they are so excited cheers guys
  • If you are going to hire a car I would advise booking through an agent before you go. Try www.canadianaffair.co.uk we used them on our previous visit and had a reasonable all in price for one day with hertz.

There is also a skiing day trip coach to Kicking Horse run by Sun Dog tours price includes your ski ticket and the drive over goes through some spectacular scenery.
