As with all things, eventually the price will go up, but listening to a discussion about this on radio 4 seems due to gas market a direct OPEC style reduce output, price goes up type of cartel will not be possible, not yet or near future anyway

The meeting was more about co-ordinating exploration and extraction plus finding new supplies

Whatever happens to this proposal to set up an OPEC style organisation for natural gas. I do not think that the price will be going down, any time soon. I, for one, would be very reluctant to have to rely on the goodwill of the Russians when it comes to gas supplies. You only have to look at the way that they cut off the supplies to Ukraine, in a fit of political pique. Now. I believe that the price in the Ukraine is more than twice what countries like Turkey have to pay.

I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

They cut of the gas apparently because the Ukraine were not paying their bills.
I believe the gas cartel in the UK use similar methods.
Supply and demand should set the price ultimately and as many users can switch to oil which has plumetted in price I think the will find it hard to keep the price high.

    Remember oil is down *72%*.

If a nation has a surplus of something they are entitled to control the supply and price. Same with Iraq, except that some nations, unwilling to economise or do without or find an alternative, just grab what is not their own and start a war.
I mean the UK has a lot of coal and wind.Let's use it.
And the woodburner industry needs to get it's finger out.
6 months wait for a stove ye gods.
  • Anyone think the energy suppliers will hike the prices once again in the new year, as they said they would earlier this year (or said "was likely"), now the bottom has dropped out of the economy?

They could of course, but I doubt they will in the short term at least, because the political opprobrium would be extremely awkward for the suppliers, and may even trigger a referall to whoever is supposed to investigate these things, cartels etc [so many name changes no idea who it is these days]

The sad fact is we no longer control these things. OPEC can hold the world to ransom (we would have to buy from them eventually) and Russia can do the same on the gas. The only way forward is for a MASSIVE investment in renewable R&D.

However their are altrenatives and if they restric supply they just cause economic caos
pushing the price oil up to make vast profits has backfired, the price has collapsed
and they have adjust rapdily to realistic prices.

For those with long memories, similar thing happened in the 1970s, however it was the West that forgot the lesson, and instead of continuing down the fuel economy route we all went back to gas guzzling

If history is any guide, we will repeat the same folly & ignore investing in alternatives because "oil is cheap again"

Iran are spending loadsa money in alternative energy for when their oil runs out.
Unfortunately Israel and the USA don't see it that way.
