Management company has put new door in today- Now locked out!

Hi

Myself & OH went out today, it being Sunday & near xmas. Kinda normal.
Came back about an hour ago, unlocked the front door to find that a new door in the corridor had been put in, to which we do not have a key, therefore locking us out of our apartment. We were very lucky that we only had to wait 15min to get in as a visitor was leaving & opened the door for us.

I'm fuming. There was no notice today or anytime this week of a new door being put in. We were given no key & the first we heard of it was when it appeared after 12.30 (time we left) & were locked out.

Im going to phone the managaement company (company that manages the building) tomorrow morning to see whats going on. But theyre pretty useless & tend to try & squirm out of things. Im off on holiday starting on Monday, but dont want to have to stay in all day for two weeks so as to not get locked out of my own appartment! Im also planning to go into work tomorrow to finish some loose ends.

What are my rights? What can I do?

Ring them and ask where your keys are.
Are you the only ones not given keys?

Why didn't you ask your neighbours if they had keys?

  • Hi
I dont have a neighbour to the left as they moved out. I asked my other neighbour who moved in yesterday. They have a key which fits the lock, but doesnt actually unlock it as it cant turn in the lock.
Cant get through to management company at the mo. Cant leave either as Im worried about being locked out (door has been propped open but can easily closed).
Im just relieved that Im not working today.

Keep trying to get in touch with them. Do they have email or fax?

Is there any way you could temporarily disable the lock without actually damaging it? Put sufficient masking tape/duct tape over the lock part so that it cannot fit. And maybe tape a note to each side of the door asking other residents not to close it and explain why.
  • shouldn't they have to give residents notice if they are going to change a front door & locks ?

smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • Hi thanks for all your replies.

Well I tried all day to get through to management company but the phone just rang & rang.
I've put a big sign on the door warning not to close it.
OH is charging one of his electric tools as he was also thinking about removing it. Just worried that this would be seen as a criminal act or something.

Im planning on taking OH out for the day for a surprise destination bday treat tomorrow. Im still worried about comming back and finding door closed & being locked out. We have one of those buzzers so people tend not to answer it unless they are expecting someone.

If we need to get the locksmith out who would be liable for the cost.

Its such a damn worry. Im pretty sure the offices are closed now for xmas. Think the door was a nice xmas present from them

I also think that a lot of the residents have gone away for xmas.

Is there anything concrete out there about them not being allowed to do this?
