Vodafone Smartstep WAP Access
Options
A friend has just tried out the WAP feature of his new mobile phone. He was surfing for about 5 minutes but it didn't decrease his payment balance at all.
Is this some New Years special offer, is it because it is early in the morning or do you get free WAP on the Vodafone Pay-as-you-talk SmartStep Price plan?
Any comments gratefully received at this quiet time in the morning...

Browsing the Vodafone Live! service is free no matter which Vodafone tariff you use (assuming you are using GPRS and not dial-up WAP for which you will pay normal dial-up charges). You only pay to access "premium services" (which you are told about before you actually access them so you know how much it will cost in advance).
Obviously, if you leave the Vodafone site and browse other wapsites you will be charged the normal rate (£7.50 per megabyte using GPRS)
Your friend should have got a guide with his new phone which sets out all the prices for his particular tariff (ie calls / SMS / data transfer etc) - presumably it would confirm in there that browsing Vodafone Live! is free. :dance:0 -
Thanks for the reply - I'll let him know and tell him to read his tariff guide...
Is the £7.50 per megabyte a normal price because it seems quite expensive...0 -
It only seems expensive because it's quoted in Mb (they used to quote per Kb which is more realistic because wapsites only contain very small amounts of data).
In reality you should only be paying a few pence per session if you are browsing and maybe a little more if you're downloading games or ringtones, but if you think of it as 0.75 pence per Kilobyte it's not quite so bad)

Thanks again for your quick reply. Thinking about it, I wish they would quote it in KB as it is more realistic as you say.0

Quite a few deals involve a free trial in the first month - I think there was when I switched my Orange from contract to payg - so this is another possibility worth checking.0
