  • I've just filled in the forms on their site but I then looked at the identification section and I don't have any of the documents that they specifiy below:
Identification to confirm who you are:
    • Full old style driving licence (UK) - current, signed*^
    • Valid UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional)*^
    • EEA photocard driving licence - current*
    • Blue disabled driver's pass*
    • Passport (UK) - current, valid and full*
    • Passport (foreign) - current, valid and full*
    • EEA member state identity card
    • Pension book^
    • DSS retirement pension card BR464 or BR2199 notification
    • DSS/benefits book/official notice issued by Benefits Agency
    • Birth certificate - under 18 only
    • Medical card - under 18 only^
    • Northern Ireland voter's card^
    • Residence permit issued by Home Office
    • Shotgun or firearms certificate - current

All I have is a passport that has expired and my national insurance number card. I wouldn't be able to get my passport renewed in time. I'm screwed! There was no mention of any of these being needed when I applied online for the Anglo Irish or BM fixed rate accounts, I think they might have mentioned requiring a recent bank or credit card statement for identification, which I have. When I get the anglo and BM forms in the post will they also request something else as ID, from the list above?

BM do some kind of preliminary online check. If you don't score high enough on that (I never do), their list is:

    Original Concil Tax bill
Original Letter from Benefits agency confirming your right to Benefits
Original HMRC Tax notification (Not P45 P60 or P2)
    Original Vehicle Licence Reminder
Certified copy of driving licence (old or new style)
    Certified copy of passport
    For under 18s:
    Certified copy of NI card
    Certified copy of bith certificate
Certified copy of NHS Medical Card

(certifiied copies have to certified using a particular proscribed phrase by a
Solicitor, Bank, Barrister, Accountant, Estate Agent, IFA, Police Officer, Minister of Religion, Dr, Post Master, JP or Teacher).

Plus the usual Utility bill/bank statement, etc.

    All recent, ofc.

    bless 'em
  • KingL, does it mention anything about the passport having to be up to date? What do they mean by copy? A photo copy? My father is an estate agent, would he do?

    Yep, current.

    Black & White photocopy.

In the particular case of passports, it must be certified by a Bank, Barrister, Lawyer, Solicitor or Notary only.

Not much joy there, then. But if you pass the online checks, you may not need anything at all....
  • I don't know what critera they use for the checks but I doubt that I'll pass it because I haven't had a job in ten years. I'm checking to see if I can get my passport renewal expedited, at a premium. Thanks.

It needs to be a full current signed Passport (UK, EU or equivalent jurisdiction) if that makes a difference.

If it's a document that has a photo on it (as a passport would) the certifying party has to write and sign "this is a good likeness" [to the person]. If there is no photograph (e.g. on an old style driving licence) they just write and sign "this is a true copy of the original document". I walked-in at a local solicitors and they charged me £10 for the priviledge, but they wouldn't write the bit about "good likeness" (even though it obviously was) so I had to 'downgrade' to an old style driving licence which they were happy to certify.

You might want to tee-up you certifier while you are awaiting your passport in case of similar stumbling blocks...
  • Thanks mate!
  • i've opened up lots of accounts elsewhere and never needed any of this stuff.
With their other auto checks they carry out, all they required from me was a signed cheque (in the name of the applicant) drawn on a Uk current account.

although BS's do list items, i've found they haven't been required for my applications.
Are you saying that BM will be demanding this in all circumstances?
