spyware must be taken seriously

Wikipedia

The Rock gang - one of the internet's most notorious phishing outfits - has teamed up with another criminal gang called Asprox. They are based in Europe and responsible for more than half of the worldwide phishing attacks and have siphoned off tens of millions of pounds from individuals' bank accounts.

The gang recently introduced a Trojan known as ZENUS or WSNPOEM. This Trojan intercepts sensitive financial information that is being transmitted from a victim's machine while in transit.

Caution.
There are many websites that allow end users to download programs free in return for permission for adware to install. This permission is very well hidden somewhere in the 'terms and conditions' or 'agreement' the user agrees to before installing the software.

Spyware is being very cleverly designed to covertly install its-self and operate on a system that makes it very difficult to detect. One of the main indicators of the presence of Spyware infestation on a computer is the slowing down of the system or 'pop-up' advertisements. One important factor to keep in mind is spyware tracks all your personal information, like name, last name, address, credit card number, surfing habits etc.
Once the criminal get this information, they are able to seriously attack your life and then have the cheek to commit crime under your name - if they so wish to do so….. Frightening isn’t it?

Spyware is the most dreadful threat that can occur to any PC . It’s always a good idea to ensure you have good anti-spyware software running in real-time while surfing the web. Real-time scanning protection and notifies you when spyware attempt to run in-memory.

There are over 530 commercial spy programs, with about 5 brand new ones appearing each month which includes keyloggers, email redirectors, screen recorders and more. It should not to be confused with advertising spyware or simply, adware. 15 percent of the spyware threats recently examined are designed to steal passwords and log keystrokes, while also attempting to steal logged-on user names etc.

A good firewall will help stop a spy program from phoning home, however a dedicated commercial spy scanner is essential to find and eradicate the threats from a system.

    in the night... :)

Not sure what response you're after here, Kev. Spyware is a bad thing, always uncheck the 'install the free super-dooper toolbar' box, make sure your anti-malware software is current and..er...as Julian Cope said "...I'm a safe surfer, darling"
my quick tips for avoiding malware (then back to fallout 3) #

    #1 dont pronsurf
#1.1 (saves renumbering) if you need to download a codec to watch "art videos", go somewhere else, plenty of good quality, free, virus free, adult entertainment out there...allegedly...not that I'd know of course...what do you take me for?
#1.5 don't go looking for free winks, emoticons or other <censored>
#1.6 that flashing link that says youre the 10000th visitor to the page, and you've won a brain...DONT CLICK IT!!
#2 use firefox, with addblock plus and noscript
#3 make sure windows is up to date
#4 make sure antivirus is up to date
#5 install some real time antispy/malware software if you're struggling with 1-4
#5 keep anti mal/spyware up to date
#6 if still struggling, refer to #1

    :)

Most spyware and malware is by people trying to get 'freebies' off the net without REALLY knowing what theyre doing. They then have to agree to download a program for it to work (Which has the 'nasty' in it)

By the way Tony, its quite safe to 'pronsurf' using the NOSCRIPT plugin for firefox (Or so ive been told :p)

, Hi Tony.. Just wanting to stress the point of the importance of anti-spyware software.

If you look thru the threads ON HERE and in many other forums there are many request for help in removing nasty’s. I've recently been caught on the hop with a real bad infection and my system is fully loaded. I tried everything in the book for 2 weeks before i eventually removed it. However once removed it left a trail of devastation and had no choice but to format,

I am amazed at how many people use the web without spyware protection. Personal i think it is crazy.
The reason i bumped was to keep the post on the first page for the users who are not-so computer savvy.

that'll be me, then. No antispyware on my current vista 64 install, and I visit some very dodgy sites (no, not the obvious). I could guarantee that the worst adaware etc would find on my pc would be cookies, but only the ones I allow.
Antivirus is, i feel, essential, even though it is extremely rare that my AV alarms go off, and every time it is a documented false positive, I just feel 'safer' knowing kasperski 'has my back'.
But (bad grammar) I do agree that for most people, belt and braces is a good idea, for some of the people I deal with removing their fingers to slow their typing would be even better

People who are computer savvy enough to visit and post on these forums will generally be intelligent enough to avoid getting infected.
I dont buy into the scaremongering one bit, I dont have any real-time spyware protection although I do scan regularly.
If you're dumb enough to go downloading dodgy stuff and clicking on stupid links then theres an argument to be had that you actually deserve getting spyware.
