I went into Comet, Marsh Mill, Plymouth when I was on hols and was interested in a £500.00 computer. I said to the guy if I buy this would you give me a laptop bag free. He replied certainly not and I went away. However spoke to those awfully nice people in Currys and they had the same computer but a £100 cheaper. So thank you so much Comet for being tight fisted because if it was not for you I would have paid more for the same item.

The day of financial judgement has now arrived.

Make sure it's the Further Education Discount you're using, and not the Education Discount. Use a cashback credit card (and pay off fully of course). Buy online and there's a £60 rebate on printers. Take the cheapest one (£60) and eBay it. Or resort to a refurbished MacBook Pro, but then I think you lose the Edu discounts. Otherwise there's very little that a new 'brick' MBP can do that any 2007/08 ones can't - go second-hand.

No No No, its the HE discount you want as that gives you a higher discount and you can get apple care for £49 for three years!!!! - worth it!!!!!!

Sorry, right so there's a HIGHER (Uni, only available from a uni computer or IP address, or with student ID in store), AND a FURTHER (Colleges) and a plain old Education store. And I'm not eligible for any of them!

Something we need to keep in mind when haggling is thinking what the retailer is making from the deal. The margins on hardware, particularly PCs is very low, perhaps only 10%. As we all know; Comet, DSG ect. make their money from selling warranties (lots of profit). You're far more likely to get a free warranty (please don't bring up Sales of Good Act...) thrown in than you are to get a money off discount. This isn't always the case, but should be the rule

I tried to haggle for my new Dell laptop yesterday - it was an emergency buy as my old one died and I've just started freelancing - and I couldn't wait to order it directly through Dell or online. So went into Currys, who didn't have the model I wanted. Tried again in PC World, who had it - and also had it in the colour I wanted, which other stores didn't! I think my mistake may have been my letting on I was looking for this colour. But the other thing that may have worked against me (sorry to say this) is that I had a woman salesperson... so no batting of eyelids was going to help.
I tried for a discount, playing on the fact that I hadn't planned to buy it today - and got a no, as expected - and then asked if they would throw in a laptop case if I bought it now. No. And then hummed and hahhed and wandered round the store a bit but still nothing thrown in. She was steely! Even after I'd said I couldn't afford to buy it today, she tried to upsell some software with it! (Tried for a discount on that but she said no).
In the end had to take the laptop as I needed it quickly, but didn't take any extras as I know free versions I can use instead.

Better luck next time maybe! Glad I tried, anyway - would kick myself if I hadn't attempted it.
