Don't Buy from DELL

I bought a Dell Inspiron 6000 at a nice price following a lot of advice from people on this forum, for which I'm really grateful but unfortunately Dell have managed to send me a used machine when the invoice is clearly stating it will be built for me.

The first laptop (which I still have now) arrived with worn out keys, a faulty screen (dead pixels) and family pictures on the My Pictures folder. It obviously isn't a new one which is what I ordered.

I contacted them and they sent a replacement, however, the rubber pads on the bottom were badly out of place, so every time I tried to open/close the lid, the laptop slid around.

I contacted them again and they sent another replacement, again, the pads at the back didn't make contact with my desk surface. This seemed very odd, almost as if I was being pushed around by the idiots who work at their manufacturing place in Ireland - the first laptop grips any surface like glue, I wonder why not with these ones

It's worth pointing out that I did try them on many different surfaces just in case my desk was somehow curved.

I contacted them again, and they said that they would pick up the replacements and see what had gone wrong with them and why they were dispatched while faulty.

Before the laptops were collected I was contacted every couple of days non-stop. Since they picked them up I've heard nothing and when I email Customer Services I hear nothing back. I've had silence for the last month and to be honest I'm fed up. I'm still using the first laptop which is clearly second hand, not new, but have paid full price for a brand new one.
I contacted them today but they say that as they've already replaced it twice so they can only repair the existing one. Not to mention the fact that both units were faulty.

If this is the type of Customer Service you expect and don't mind paying up to 8p per minute to talk to nutters, then go ahead and buy from Dell. If not, I'd advise you to go elsewhere.
That, is an excellent question...

Strange bunch at Dell! I bought a laptop - it was fine by the way - but they sent me a spare CD drive! I wasn't the only one either, someone else (on this forum I think) also got a spare drive - maybe they are all on work experience or something....

Work Experience? If only I could speak to someone at Dell who had as much experience as Work Experience Boy!! :(

I've now received two incorrect callbacks from the Finance Dept who had no idea why they had been asked to call me back!

  • The Finance Dept will probably deal with your request for a chargeback through your credit card!
  • for what it is worth we have brought over 400 dell systems and i have found them far better than anyone else.
I have finally acknowledged my debt.....
  • Dell are absolute cr*p

Their so-called Technical Support staff just read from scripts, nothing but dodgy Indian call centres

I too have been responsible for the purchase of several Dells and have been very happy with them.

I recently had a problem I couldn't myself. It was me overlooking something but the woman in technical support was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and we resolved it quickly.

Dell tend to be more reliable than a lot of other makes. THere again I think they are aimed more at the business customer who have their own IT department to rectify problems etc.

My main bugbear with Dell is that when you phone them up for Tech Support they try to get you to do various things when you know the answer.

eg the unit kept switching itself off after 20 minutes. It was defo a fan problem as opened it up and the fan wouldnt move at all. They then sent a replacement motherboard etc and wanted me to fit it myself - err hello we pay you a maintenance contract and do not expect this - plus surely this would invalidate some sort of warranty

My colleague did a lot of damage to her computer by following their instructions when her machine went wrong. When she asked me what she should do I reminded her that she had onsite warranty and to insist they come out and fix it and not to take the cover off again. Once she stood her ground, they did just that.

Dell were featured on Watchdog for this issue.
  • I have a DEll Dimesion Desktop, the processor fan went last week, they wanted £200 to fix it. I took it into town, to a shop, they found one daisy chained it across the mother board, cos of course Dell have made there parts unique with regards to connectors. Total cost £7.95. P.C doesnae recognise it, but, hey main thingis it works.
