Ok this is legal and must stay legal.

I have a load of bought music on CD and I dont want them in my car as I wouldnt want an original to get broke or stolen.

So I want to make my own copy for myself in my car, the thing is Windows Media Player has jumped/skipped on occasion when doing a burn or rip I dont know which it is as I havent got around to listening to the ripped music but the problem occurs on the burned file on playback.

So what is the best freebie software for rip/burn process to eliminate jumping/skipping.

Please keep it legal

I find if i use other applications when burning then I sometimes have this problem, so don't use anything or do anything on the pc whilst its burning. Shut down stuff like msn if its open. Also, you could try burning on a lower speed, as I think this can help too. Have you got anything else like nero or roxio to use instead, in case media player is being a wee bit temperamental.

CDEX is free, simple to use and uses an internet database to find the corerct ID3 tags to give to the MP3.

Use the lame encoder for good results.

we use freeripmp3 which is freeware (might be shareware now as our version is quite old). You put the cd in the drive, tick the tracks and rip.You burn with your burning software ,though we use it to transfer music to one of those little usb mp3 players

I tend to find "5 Star Shareware"

    http://www.5star-shareware.com/Windows/Music/

a good place to look for utilities like this.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

I wouldn't and don't use Windows Media Player for anything! There are far better applications freely available for download. I recommend dbPower AMP for ripping and whatever you normally use to burn, for burning.

    ;)

Well I usually use WMP for burning so that kinda ruins the above. :(

Don't know if it is the same lame encoder as for audacity but you will find a good description at Ars Technica http://arstechnica.com/guides/tweaks/encoding.ars/2
