Options
my computer works fine but i cannot access any of my secure sites, ie bank credit cards etc. i can go on ebay but cannot pay for anything or go to my ebay.i am told its down to the norton anti virus that came with my computer when i bought it back in january this year. PC world have told me, so far, four different ways to sort the problem. none have worked. has anyone managed to remove NAV from there computer, if so could you please tell me. i am sure its only a few clicks of my keyboard. any help would be very welcome.

I do not believe that NAV is the cause of your problem but if you really do want to remove it, go to their website and search for a removal tool.

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Norton-Removal-Tool.shtml

Norton Removal Tool descriptiondownload_small.gifDownloadoriz_dots.gifSymNRT is a program that can remove some Norton software from your computer. SymNRT runs on Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

SymNRT should be used only if you have tried to uninstall the Norton program using Windows Add/Remove Programs and that did not work.

SymNRT will remove these--and only these--Norton programs:
    · Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005
    · Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004
    · Norton AntiVirus 3, 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
    · Norton SystemWorks 2004/2004 Professional Edition
    · Norton SystemWorks 2005/2005 Premier edition
    · Norton Password Manager 2004
    · Norton Internet Security 2004/2005
    · Norton Internet Security 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
    · Norton Personal Firewall 2004/2005
    · Norton AntiSpam 2004/2005
    · Ghost 2003 or Ghost Version 9.0

Who told you this? PC World? Like espresso says, from what you say, it doesn't sound like NAV issues (although it might be).

Browntoa has given you the right tool to remove it if you want to.

I guess you could always reinstall it (if you must) but don't go online without protection.

If you decide to remove Norton you should install a replacement antivirus and firewall before removal then fire them both up immediately Norton is gone.

I suggest antivirus from AVG here......

    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

    and the Zonealarm firewall here......

    http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

(note....before you download ZA it will scan the PC to check all is in order)

If you want to investigate a little deeper before doing anything else the other thing I can suggest is that you run a HijackThis scan. HJT doesn't actually "interact" with anything on your PC to make changes. It simply makes lists of running processes and run keys in your registry. It can reveal things some scanners can't find or fix. Once it reveals something bad THEN HJT can be used to fix it.

Let me know if you want to do this and I'll walk you through it.

Best of luck. Do let us know how you get on.

Let me put it another way, why do you think that Norton Anti-virus is causing this problem

Assuming that you have not got another anti-virus program installed on your machine, which could be causing a conflict (Norton needs to be totally removed before installing another anti-virus program) it could be many things.

I suggest that you read though this thread as there is a lot of spherical objects talked about Norton anti-virus causing problems!

quote from the last posts in that thread (seems to blame Nortons !!) :-

Then removed my other firewall. Removed all traces of unused norton firewall. which left only the windows firewall.

I then successfully managed to updated the windows firewall and I could log onto secure sites.

The next step was to reinstall my sygate firewall. No problems and I could access secure sites.

Touch wood. Everything is ok. :T

Unfortunately the original poster has given very little information about the actual problem, OS, firewall etc. but I understood that his question was about Norton Anti-virus NOT Norton Internet Security Suite or Norton firewall etc.

from my experience, the only time I get weird problems with PC's like this it is one of the Nortons products

friends PC stops sending emails....Nortons doing it, did'nt matter what you did , could not send, remove and install other software...works fine

other PC same as above, could not get access to cetain sites, change firewall settings, allow cookies to those site..add to trusted sites, no joy, uninstall Nortons and install altenatives.......again work fine

list could go on....blue screen crashes etc

Sometimes we have to think past the obvious. OP also said they went to PC world for advice, so (no offence to the OP) they're not too up on computers themself. If they have NAV on their machine and told that the problem is with Norton then they assume it's the same thing.
  • sometimes i get this problem only to find norton has not booted up at startup, simply opening norton and starting it manually then going onto bank site/ebay etc works fine afterwards.may not be the case with yours though
