in Water bills
Hi, i'm new and just wanted to tell you about this.
In the last few months i've had doubts that my water bills were correct, i seemed to be paying far too much but didnt do anything about it. Then i joined here and read this section. I called Southern Water just to query what i was paying and they said it was correct, but i was £48 in debt and was using double the water i should be for a person living alone (i have a water meter, paying £35 a month). That was a week ago and since then i was checking for leaks (nothing) and desperately trying to use less water ( i was already only flushing the toilet about twice or three times a week!)
But then yesterday i came home from work and the couple upstairs had no water. They got a plumber out and he found that somehow their water had been turned off at the meter. But he also found out that all the water meters to the building were mixed up and that i was paying for theirs!
Called Southern Water today and they're gonna get someone out to check. In the meantime they've put a 30 day lock on my account.
I believe this kinda thing is quite common but i was so pleased, and rather annoyed that they got it wrong, that i wanted to write here about it.

As you say this situation is fairly common, especially with conversions of houses to flats.
To be fair to the water company, it is probably not their fault and it is the developers/builders that are to blame.
They tell the water company which water mains(pipe) belong to each flat.
The trouble will come if they tell the couple upstairs they have to pay arrears; hopefully they will give you a refund and write off the extra the couple will owe.0 -
The couple upstairs will have been wondering why people make such a fuss aout water. They have been using whatever thay wanted and their bill was going down
As a point of interest, did you turn off the water at the meter?Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

Turned it off at the meter? No i didnt, didnt realise it was possible. But i bet they think i turned their's off cos it does seem weird that it happened.
I got a call from the water board today. Gotta wait two weeks to get them to come out :mad:0
