Dorothy Perkins "Seven"

Options
My partner has a Dorothy Perkins store card, she uses it very occasionally for small purchases and pays off in full each month.
This morning she received a letter from Dorothy Perkins "7" enclosing a pin number and a note saying "Your new Seven Credit Card is on its way" (small print says that it's a Mastercard issued by GE Capital Bank Limited).

1. She hasn't applied for a credit card and doesn't want one.
2. There was no return address.
3. There were no details about APR, no mention of T+C's, zilch.
4. The only telephone number given was an 'activation' number, 0870 124 2414.

She called the number, went through to India and asked exactly what was going on. She was told "all store cards are automatically being transferred to credit cards as a special offer".
My partner said that she was disgusted by this and asked for an address with which to register an official complaint. The operator refused to give an address but said that a 'complaint' would be registered by phone and forwarded to 'Head Office' (wherever the hell that may be).
Needless to say she's cancelling the lot on principle.

Didn't M+S try this a few years ago? What was the outcome?

  • Yeah, M&S did this in the last year or 2, converted a hell of a lot of thier storecard accounts into M&S&More credit cards. They didn't totally do away with the normal storecard, as i still know of a few people who hold them.

What exactly is your partner's problem with it, anyway? You say:

A storecard is basically a stripped-down credit card, the only difference being with a storecard you are very tightly constrained as to where you can use it.

I'd imagine the APR would be no worse than the storecard, the T&Cs almost identical (and please correct me if i'm wrong).

I'd tell you if i knew what they were ...... ;)

It's more the fact of having a full Mastercard foisted on her without permission, notice or choice.
She might want to go elsewhere and get a good deal? She might not want the temptation of a CC which can be used anywhere and stick with the 'constraints' of DP and only buying their knickers and bra's....
It's just a way to entice people into more debt and's very underhand and immoral.
  • Yeah, i can see where she's coming from. If that is how she feels, she's done the right thing in cancelling.

    Do you reckon? ;)

GE Capital are massive. They provide a large number of the UK's storecards.

After the M&S fiasco, banks have to give customers an opt out for automatic switching to a credit card.

Your partner probably received a letter or insert advising of the change and asking her to call a number if she didn't want the credit card.

Not sure what you are complaining about to be honest.

Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

The point is, it's clearly designed to give as little information as possible so people can't cancel. Then if you want to cancel, it's a bloody 0870 pay number? Can you not see that?
  • Debenhams (also run by GE) have done the same recently but they did send out a letter a month in advance advising that this was what they were doing, giving all the details of the card and a number to ring if you did not want to convert.

Are you sure that you did not receive a letter a month ago?

Had a response this morning. Advice was supposed to be sent out with statement, but because the balance was zero the statement wasn't sent that month.....
Apology, refund on the 0870 number called, and the store card is allowed to remain in-situ without being converted. Thanks all.
