Just been reading the post on the .5p charge for Telewest (and NTL) customers .... My solution .... (only good if you have Broadband, and you're ok with setting it all up) ....
Get yourself a VoIP Router, connect it to your Broadband .... use one line for sipdiscount (where UK landline calls are free) and Sipgate for a free incomming number .... and then potentially you can 'ditch' your traditional phone line ....
It's worth mentioning that VoIP is'nt perfect - it's not that reliable as traditional phone lines, and if you loose power - your phone line goes ! (so have a mobile to hand for emergancies) ....
Hope this helps !!

Yes - I'm a great fan of VoIP and save a fortune using it for my business (and clients) .... if you're daunted by where to get started on a technical level and configuring it yourself scares you .... why not look at freetalk (From The Link) or Vonage ....
For £80 for 1 year - Free Free talk offer the hardware and unlimited calls to UK 01/02 numbers - which works out at £6.70 a month .... No Line rental to pay, you get an incomming phone number, plus some other features ....
Given the low cost - you can get rid of you TW or NTL line and start saving !
Hope that Helps

Can you go into more detail about the kit used, where from, prices, setup, etc using sipdiscount for free uk landline calls (I assume free means no connection charge and 0 p/min) and use of 1899 for mobiles.
I think the Linksys PAP box (about £35 + p&P) - unlocked - from say broadbandbuyer - is used to connect 2 ordinary phones, one for sipdiscount use (outbound) and one for incoming calls via free sipgate number. I think this means sipdiscount don't provide an incoming number....
I have Telewest broadband with a cable modem connected to my PC by an ethernet cable. Can I use the Linksys box with my setup, or do I have to go wireless? I have a pair of Orchid DECT phones with built in dialler for 1899 use so I'm assuming I can plug it into the Linksys to access Sipdiscount...
Also, how do I configure Linksys to know that my incoming sipgate number is 0121 123 4567 for example.
Can this kit be used with other providers as the market continues to change?

SIP Discount don't yet provide an incoming number.
Sipgate offer for free an incoming number from a vast number of areas.
You need to connected the PAP2 to a router, it doesn't have to be wireless.
I have a wireless router as it was cheaper than a wired one: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=220 (currently out of stock, and just under £25). I only use the wireless side when friends come who have laptops.
With Sipgate you just enter your user name and password into the PAP2, and the domain as sipgate.co.uk, once the PAP2 has registered on the Sipgate network Sipgate knows to direct traffic to your PAP2 and the phone rings.
Your just plug your DECT phones or standard corded phones into the PAP2 (you may need a couple of RJ11 to BABT connectors - with ring capacitors if you have some UK only phones that don't have their own ring circuit - or you could butcher a RJ11 lead and connect it to a BABT master socket).
If you buy the unlocked version of the PAP2, then yes you can easily switch providers, I have tested the PAP2 with Sipgate, FWD, 18866, 1899, VoIPBuster and SIP Discount.
The PAP2 has two lines, so you need at least one phone connected to each line, unless you are happy to discount the phone from one to the other when you make calls.
I am using these services over a Telewest broadband connection - no longer have a regular phone line. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
BexTech Beat me to it .... with a very good description of how VoIP works and how you need to configure it ....
- As I and others have mentioned - if you know what you're doing Sipdiscount and Sipgate - can effectivly mean you have a no (or very low cost) phone system via your broadband. But you will need to know what you're doing technically, and I woul'nt recommend it to a total IT novice.
- The next Option of using Freetalk (etc), gives you the benifit of Broadband but for a low cost, and no (or low) technical hassle.
Regarding bandswidth - I sucessfully install VoIP on 512 services, just rememebr that data intensive internet use can affect call quality unless you use QoS (Quality of Service) settings on your router. And as I mentioned in my earlier post on this thread - it's not as reliable as traditional lines (Internet and power depenant) so always make sure you have an alternative method of commuincation (eg. Mobile).0 -
Has anybody had any success in registering their Sipgate number with 18866, 1899, or VoIPBuster and then using that for outgoing VoIP calls? I haven't been able to get it to work.
The limitations I've found in general with VoIP are:
1. Unable to get totally free calls using same outbound and inbound number.
2. Unable to mask outgoing Caller ID.
If anyone knows a way around these I'd love to hear.
