Student Insurance 2008/09

Hey, I know there is other threads, but they haven't been touched for years. I was wondering if anyone had any up-to-date info. Anybody actually had dealings with these companies (good or bad).

My case:

I'm off in 4 weeks and I want to be covered... Alas I seem to have all the things that need extra. I'm staying in halls.

General contents up to £4000.
+ Bike - £150
+ Laptop (desktops are included in basic cover!) - £1070 (I want cover all the time, not just when it's sitting at my desk).

Now.. Natwest student quote...

SUMMARY
Possessions Sum Insured £4000 £68.85
Laptop & Portable Computers (Room Only) Limit £750.00 Inclusive

ADDITIONAL COVER BENEFITS
Possessions Accidental Damage: Inclusive
Course Fees and Rental Protection: Inclusive
Criminal Assault: Inclusive
Legal Expenses: Inclusive
Vacation Cover: Inclusive

OPTIONAL ALL RISKS EXTENSIONS
Laptop or Handheld Computer: Cover up to £1,000
+£39.67 Pedal Cycles: Cover up to £250 +£37.39

PREMIUM £145.91
TOTAL PAYABLE £145.91

Now... the "extentions" is the out of halls protection on my laptop... does that mean if it's in my room and stolen they would pay out £750 max, I'm mugged outside they will pay £1000 max?

Anyway, I don't really know who else to try, NU, Co-Op etc don't seem to apply to students... Endsleigh seems to have pretty bad press online

Any tips to share?

p.s. sorry if I'm not meant to copy and paste the Natwest quote, tell me and I'll edit it out asap.

If this might be an option, could you ask if your parents could add you to their contents policy? If they can, this is likely to work out free, or at least cheaper...

Yougofurther forum seem to be buzzing of them always trying to find loopholes into not paying and taking ages to process claims. Although I suppose it is unfair to say just they do that. Maybe I have just been reading in the wrong places.. people seems ready to moan online, but not recommend. If people pipe up and say about good experiences I'm all for giving them a go.

I will have to try and tie my parents down to try this out, as I don't even know who they are with, let alone if it's possible! Thank you for the tip

our experience of engsleigh was fine... student house robbed ..personal stuff plus new laptop taken .... all settled OK in about 4/5 weeks... we thought that was OK.
  • Rachel, NatWest insurance will change as of 16th August 2008. The guide I put up on the boards may not mention that. Endsleigh are well known as student insurance for years so they are very good on price. I have no idea how good they are on processing claims once something goes wrong.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

  • Karma Insurance is a very good company for students possesions/contents insurance.

They offer a pay monthly system, so it works out to be really affordable.

Try getting a quote... im sure you'll find that it's better than most others out there..

I've just seen Karma insurance advertised in the UCAS newsletter - but I've never heard of them before.
how do you find out who is the best one to go for?

Teesside Uni has an Endsleigh office run by uni students on campus.

I have been with them for a year, and when my room was broken into, Endsleigh dealt with my claim very efficiently and quickly...the whole matter was resolved within a week.

I paid under £15 for the full year, for room contents and on top of that I have paid an extra £5 for world wide lappy cover!!!!

I can not fault them in any way....but like I have mentioned there is an office on my campus!
