Small air conditioning units

I bought from B&Q some years ago for use in my bedroom and it has been great once you get used to the noise! However I am sure its effectiveness is getting less and wondered if like a car you can 're-charge' (is this the right word) them.
It may better to get another one so wonder if there are any suggestions. Something quieter would be good but remote control essential. Also happy to hang out the hose but not wishing to bother with one of the split type of units.

If they are not used then aye they become less efficient.#I know you can have some recharged, but I guess it depends on the manufacture/design.
Check the manual - which no doubt has been thrown away. Check on-line most manufactures have the manuals on line now.
Air-conditioners don't cool anything down, they just move the heat from one place to another and at the same time produce more heat in doing so.
Rubbish product there are much easy and cost effective ways of keeping cool.
I'd like to see them banned just the way patio heaters are going.0 -
I can see your point but without one my health would be much worse so it is, for me, a necessary evil.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.0

Funny - I was just wondering about this myself. Ours doesn't seem to work as well as it did when we first bought it.0 -
I would like one, but they seem expensive - OH bought what I thought was one but it turns out to be an 'evaporative air cooler', not the same thing at all, and only effective in low humidity. Not much use when its hot and humid (the worst kind of weather!!) so I think its going back before we unpack it!0

Send it back!
I had one before my real air con unit and gave it away. It needed lots of ice cubes to make it give any cool air out and was only any good if you were right next to it. Total waste of money.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.0 -

Beg, borrow or steal (only joking) to get one as they have kept my sanity especially on the warmer nights.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.0 -
I could really do with one, and it would be helpful for me for health reasons as well as comfort - however, I was talking to a friend who's mum bought two last winter, when, apparently they are often reduced to half price, so I will definitely be investing in one then!0

Absolute rubbish, of course they cool things down, albeit only in a restricted zone.
Read what I said...
they cool nothing down - just move the heat from one place to another and produce heat in doing so as well as using fossil fuels ( mainly gas/coal powered power stations)
They actually help cause cities to become hotter than they would be without them running.0
