Do any of you continue the OS theme at work?
I try to do the saving energy thing, and swith off anything not in use - lights, TV, CD players etc. I always turn off my PC monitor and speakers every night - can't do the actual PC as I recieve a feed to it overnight
I also recycle all old news papers and A4 paper - being a news desk you can imagine that's quite a bit!! Old tin cans and cardboard goes for recycling too, and plastic if I can get to it before it's chucked
And I only fill the kettle with enough to make the cups of tea required.
So what do the rest of you do?

i only use paper clips, cos staples use lots of energy to create, and are only used once. i do most of the things you do too, also reuse files and stuff by condensing them after 12 months into one wallet with dates on, then using stickers to reuse old files.0

I used to tear up unwanted A4 sheets that were only printed on one side, and use them for writing my telephoned orders down. Also used email instead of hard copy where possible. Saved filing space too
.
One thing I hope you don't do - turn the photocopier off! :eek: It used to drive me mad having to wait for it to warm up when I needed an urgent copy.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

You've made me feel bad - I work for a news agency and all our copious amounts of paper go into the bin!!! I can't face luggingit all home, and console myself that if there's no easily-biodegradeable stuff in landfill then the other stuff takes longer to break down - or am I kidding myself?
BUT I turn off lights, my computer, other people's computers, etc., and liberate milk that people want to throw away simply because we've got too much!!:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Hi Skintchick.
I don't know how well it would be received but you could speak to your bosses about organising a recycling company to supply you with bins/bags to recycle in the workplace.
I think i remember correctly that you work in london? If so then this link may be of use

I didnt know that about staples! :eek: I thought i was being good by using staples because i thought most people would throw away the paper-clip?
I always use the paper that i have photo-copied/printed wrong as a note pad. I wait till i have quite a few and then staple it all together. I also do this for other people in my office - or they will use a brand new pad just for writing telephone numbers etc down on! :rolleyes:
I dont really drink tea...so i guess i am saving electricity therehehe
Ummm what else...i turn off the comp monitor (also cant turn it off fully because of it being updated over night), make sure the lights are off and turn the franking machine off.:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting fire to my knickers:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:0 -
I just don't go to work, thus saving on petrol, and the copious pairs of tights I used to get through when I did workOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

I contacted our council about this, but the boss wouldn't play along!Comping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -
I'm lucky enough to work in a new building (just over a year old) which is well stocked with recycle bins for paper, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, and cans. Thanks for the tip about staples - will try and reduce use of them!
It always amazes me how few people switch off monitors and PCs. Mine all go off every night. If I see a monitor on and I know the owner is on leave, I always switch it off
There's no kettle here, just a water heater that's constantly on - that bugs me, but nothing I can do about it.
I wish people switched our copier off but they don't - but it does go to energy-saving mode after a while and take forever to come back anyway!!
I've started reusing scrap printer paper (you know the ones where just one line of email signature went onto another page!) for printing things in rough - and even nicking paper out of the recycling bin! I do a similar thing to Bendybops and with scrap paper from home I plan to make phone notepads for Christmas for friends and family. I also take home the scrap paper for scrap printing at home, and for my voluntary job, and to make into envelopes. I wouldn't do that if other people reused it, but they don't.More energy-conserving to reuse rather than recycle, eh?
scuzz, you have a crazy bosscan't believe they won't play along - sooner or later they'll get fined for not recycling, I reckon - might as well be ahead of the game!!

What about using the stairs instead of the lift or the escalator? Saves energy and keeps you fit, though maybe not too good if you work on the 20th floor!
We travel a lot with work, so if its cheaper to pay for the hotel instead of the round trip home, companies will sometimes agree. Which if it's saving on flights is an environmental saver and you get to explore some different places.
Even travelling with work we try to use public transport or share cars/taxis when it's a viable alternative.
In hotels turn off the extra lights you don't need, the cleaners nearly always switch on every light to make sure it's working as part of their cleaning routine.0 -

Sadly, councils charge businesses to collect recycling, and my bosses won't pay for it.
But I do collect up scrap paper, cut it in half and use it for notes, lists, etc.
I really ought to take the paper home for recycling in the kerbside box.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
