It's been brought to my attention that we may not be getting Vitamin D through sunlight during certain months of the year. However there is a calculator HERE that enables you to put in your latitude and longditude, height above sea level and after you have selected whether it is cloudy or not, will work out how long is available for vitamin D to be created through your skin.
I've played with it a bit and assuming it is broken cloud tomorrow I need to be outside between 9.64 (about 9.40am) and 13.89 (about 1.50pm) and there will be 4.25 hrs available for me to get my sunshine vitamin free.
By the end of the month I need to be out between 11.04 and 12.39 as there are only 1.35hrs available for free vitamin D synthesis.
In November the sky has got to be virtually cloudless or there simply isn't sufficient sunshine available for synthesis to take place.
Vitamin D is also available from food sources WHF vitamin d food sources.
A quarter of your daily amount is provided when you drink one cup of milk.
Fish is a good source of Vit d as well.

Is there such a thing as getting too much free Vitamin D?Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

I'm no expert but I think vitamin D levels may help the absorption of the calcium from the milk but does it have high levels itself?
I think a better source of vit D is cod liver oil. Anyone help us out here?0 -

The point in posting the calculator was to demonstrate that for several months of the year even going out in the UK around midday without a hat, suncream and make up on you will not get sufficient benefit from the sun to affect your Vitamin D requirement. For the rest of the year about 15mins of direct exposure to sunlight, without suncream, make-up or a hat, will enable you to obtain your daily requirement of Vit D naturally but the research shows that there is an almost universal vitamin D inadequacy among elderly patients admitted to UK hospitals for hip fractures.
So the message is to ensure your elderly relatives (particularly those living in Scotland) do get out around midday most of the year and either supplement their Vit D or ensure adequate supplies in their diet between September and April. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Well that's a turn up for the books. I would have thought there would be more skin cancer deaths in Australian rather than Britain. I have always been sun smart even as a youngster. I am fair haired & skinned so the slip, slop & slap has always been a must. I didn't think any long term harm would come from holidaying Brits sunbaking etc.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

Vitamin If you live north of the line connecting San Francisco to Philadelphia, odds are you don't get enough vitamin D. Multimap Boston latitudeThe same holds true if you don't, or can't, get outside for at least a 15-minute daily walk in the sun. African-Americans and others with dark skin tend to have much lower levels of vitamin D, due to less formation of the vitamin from the action of sunlight on skin. A study of people admitted to a Boston hospital, for example, showed that 57% were deficient in vitamin D.(18)
Vitamin D helps ensure that the body absorbs and retains calcium and phosphorus, both critical for building bone. Laboratory studies also show that vitamin D keeps cancer cells from growing and dividing.
Some preliminary studies indicate that insufficient intake of vitamin D is associated with an increased risk of fractures, and that vitamin D supplementation may prevent them.(19) It may also help prevent falls, a common problem that leads to substantial disability and death in older people.(20) Other early studies suggest an association between low vitamin D intake and increased risks of prostate, breast, colon, and other cancers.(21)
Optimal Intake:The current recommended intake of vitamin D is 5 micrograms up to age 50, 10 micrograms between the ages of 51 and 70, and 15 micrograms after age 70. Optimal intakes are higher, though, with 25 micrograms (1000 IU) recommended for those over age 2. Very few foods naturally contain vitamin D. Good sources include dairy products and breakfast cereals (which are fortified with vitamin D), and fatty fish such as salmon and tuna. For most people, the best way to get the recommended daily intake is by taking a multivitamin, but the level in most multivitamins (10 micrograms) is too low.I think a better source of vit D is cod liver oil. Anyone help us out here?
However Cows Milk also contains Calcium. A cup of cow's milk supplies 24.4% of the daily value important vitamin. A problem is that These figures are for an average adult and an elderly person need 3 times that amount. Trying to ensure they consumed 2 cups of milk a day would be reasonable but 4 (normal adult needs) impossible and 12 cups (to provide the minumum needed for someone over 75) ridiculous.
Which is why supplements are needed in winter and exposure to sunlight for 15 mins a day at least between April and September necessary for those who live above Boston US Latitude 42 or the Costa Brava Lat 42
So it more than applies to me and all UK citizeins as I live north of Boston Lincs UK Lat 52.5 Plymouth at Lat 50 is still well north of Lat 42.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Codl liver oil with naturally occuring vit A+D (not synthetic as it is toxic),Butter from grass fed cattle (ANCHOR) also contains important OMEGA 3,eggs are all good dietary sources of vitamin d.
The problem is that scientists are waking up to the fact that the RDA amount for this vitamin is wrong and has been set too low,it is also higher in America than the UK.
If you a black, asian or eldery you need even more because it takes longer for your skin to assimilate the vitamin D.
It is very hard to overdose on vitamin D weh it occurs naturally in food along with Vitamin A Cod Liver OIl is your best source of these vitsplus the important OMEGA 3.

Also you cannot generate enough from exposing your hands and make up free face to sunlight the RDA's were set by using nearly total body exposure to sunlight.
If we all came from the tropics the human system was genetically designed to generate thousands of units of vit D 20,000 IU are generated within 20 mins of full body exposure this is much more than the governmet tells us we need 400iu per day this figure is to prevent rickets not maintain health plus we practically live indoors now and do have active outdoor lifestyles. Are U getting enough Vitamin D in your life!?0 -
This is what I was told at the menopause clinic last week.
In the first three years after menopause a woman quickly looses bone calcium, there after the loss slows down. It is therefore sensible to take calcium and Vitamin D supplement during and for three years after the preserve bone mass.
For thoses with a family history of oesteoperothis extra supplements can be got on prescription. I had menopause at 38 and mum at 26. Dad also suffered early. I was incorrectly told 'good diet' was enough by another doctor so happily 'ate well' for 9 years. I just had another bone scan and have the bones of an 81 year old woman. I am 49!
I have only just started supplements. Feel so cross. Please get checked!!
