Unless I missed something, it too confirmed that my overdraft limit was still the same?
Hello, yes the overdraft is still the same but we are complaining about the fact that we do not want to be charged 18.8% interest on balances which could be as much as £1750. We were all under the impression that the interest-free overdraft and Grad Bank Account would last for 3 years after graduation, but HSBC has now changed this as quietly as they can (not even informing branch staff!) and has not given us enough notice! Even the letter was unclear, giving the impression that nothing was changing, yet stating very clearly that this is in accordance with the T&Cs.0 -
Right, read the letters properly and have just been on the phone.
The "mass mailing" letter IS correct i.e. no interest free "chunk".
Luckily I am able to clear the balance and shut the account (I graduated a while back) and told this to the chap on the phone. Has everyone else who is leaving told them why? Might get the message through!
It's not a student / graduate bank account but if it helps Alliance and Leicester have 0% overdraft for a year and say they will match your overdraft limit if you use their switching service (free, but keep checking up on this). I used this last summer so I'd check the details again! Be aware though - after a year you are charged daily for your overdraft up to 5 pounds a month. Which works out a reasonable interest rate if you're nearly at your limit!
I doubt this would suit people just beginning their courses though."She who asks is a fool once. She who never asks is a fool forever"
I'm a fool quite often0 -
I sent HSBC a message about this using the Message system on Internet Banking.
Here's the reply I got:
I got a message from the same person but just got told that Graduate Bank accounts are only 2 years and have been since last year. About the time it came about with the removal of interest free overdrafts for graduate customers.
Unfortunately in the letter that I received in September 07 it only talks about the interest free credit and not the length of the Graduate Account...2020 Mortgage-Free Wannabes #20 £1495.03/£2760 OP0 -
Posted this in another thread but the Facebook Group that challenged HSBC last year now has this message on their page****NEWSFLASH******************
Dear all
Re: HSBC Interest free overdraft entitlement for Graduates
All final year student customers and existing graduate customers of HSBC’s student banking service have been sent a Direct Mail letter dated 17/6 to inform them their interest free overdraft entitlement would be changing as they enter their next year of Graduation.
A number of students have contacted NUS with concerns about the communications and NUS has been in discussion with HSBC on the issuies involved.
This letter is a standard one that lets customers know their account is changing. In addition to this mailing, students are also receiving system generated overdraft renewal prenotification letters which detail their overdraft limit and interest free entitlement as at the date of the letter- not what they will be changing to in a month.
Although the limit information in the overdraft renewal letter is correct, the interest free entitlement wording is confusing as it states the existing entitlement rather than the amount customers will go to when they are migrated on 19 July. Therefore, some customers are getting the impression that they will get the interest free overdraft mentioned in this letter until the next review date in approx 12 months. This contradicts the message given in the other letters.
Following discussions we can confirm there has been no policy change for customers, since 2006 HSBC customers have been on a 2 year Graduate proposition. HSBC have now assured NUS that they will look in detail at the confusion caused for customers affected and will take steps to clarify the situation for their student/graduate customers.
In the meantime HSBC have advised any student or graduate customers that are confused to contact them with questions. We would also encourage any students with remaining issues to contact NUS directly.
Best Wishes

This is interesting because I recently looked into graduate accounts (2 months ago) and HSBC's graduate service was a £1750 interest-free OD facility in year 1, with the interest-free OD falling by £500 each year - in effect, it lasts 4 years. I was planning on taking this up next month so I guess I'll have to check it again before I decide.0

I have just got off the phone to HSBC discussing the same problem. I too have received two letters in the last 14 days; one stating that my £1000 interest free interest free overdraft would continue until June 2009 and the other stating that as of July 19th 2008 I would be paying 18.8% on any overdraft I have. Unfortunately for the girl on the other end of the phone, I am VERY angry about this! She admitted to me that the first letter was sent out "by mistake" and that I would be receiving a letter shortly to clarify the situation, but that I would have to pay the 18.8% interest. I asked about the complaints procedure at which point she put me on hold for 7 minutes before coming back to tell me that she would put a note on my file (brilliant!) but that nothing would be done about it (even better!) as they were going to write to me anyway to "clarify the situation" etc etc etc. I asked to speak to a senior member of staff but she waffled on and basically said no. She did suggest that I go into my branch to discuss my personal circumstances, but this was after I had almost started crying about how I had not been in my job long, had bought a house and basically had no money!!
Can they really treat their customers like this??? :mad:0 -
I received my overdraft review letter. And it's the exact same overdraft as I have now! I can't beleive they are going to charge me a £25 arrangement fee too
I got a call from a local branch today (HSBC must have passed on my online message). They said they don't have any record of the letter saying my graduate account is coming to and end, only the overdraft review one and have asked for me to send them a copy of the letter for them to investigate.
I expect this will turn out the same as other people where the review one is the incorrect letter, but will just see what the branch say first.0 -

Arrgh, I'm in EXACTLY the same situation...I got the 'we're ending your interest-free overdraft' letter first, then a week later the 'you can have £1000 interest-free' one. I was extremely confused and annoyed so I have now contacted the Financial Ombudsman. The person there said that I have a good case for complaint because of the conflicting correspondence I have received. The number is 020 7964 0500, they were really helpful when I called.0 -
My branch got back in touch with me and say they have amended their information to show that I graduated last year and so get another year of graduate account
Hopefully this is not including the £500 on top that I currently pay interest on.
