Unfortunately its all in th T & C and whether we read them or not, your expected to know about it. :(

Fair enough - but it's very greedy of the banks! As I said earlier it's a good lesson for my son.

What's so annoying though is the pathetic interest banks pay on current accounts etc - but when a customer inadvertently goes over by a very small amount which can obviously quickly be rectified they are making obscene profits on it. The charges are outrageously disproportionate

Yes but bank managers need to get their big bonuses somewhere.

Also I have been with HSBC for an extremely long time and through faults of my own, being under 18 as well, I had a few direct debits make me go overdrawn as I forgot about them. However, I was never charged on these (I went over maybe twice, once only like 50p, and the other a few £), but I would go to bank and deposit some money if that happened.

I know it's not polite to ask a lady's age, but when did NatWest use Visa and Visa Electron cards with their student accounts? I've been with them on the prestudent/student/graduate account since the mid-late 90s and have only ever had Solo/Switch/Maestro cards, and the Solo was only until I started uni. Once I'd started they automatically gave me the Switch card without me having any income (I started work for the first time a week before starting uni) because it was a standard feature.

    Sorry, I meant Solo.
I am EU worker that is why they refused to give me normal account. (I am married to English though..) At least that is what I think after seeing a few posts on Credit Cards where there is similar complaint and the people having the same problem are also foreigners.
  • For going over his limit (unknowingly and purely accidentally) by 43p :o my son has been charged £28.

He was sent a statement by Natwest saying they would be deducting a £28 'maintenance charge' without any explanation of what it was for so he had to go to the bank to query it.

He was told it was for being 43p overdrawn.

Although this is probably a good lesson for my son about the banking system in general- the maintenance charge seems totally disproportionate to the 'crime'.

He is a student and works part time so this charge is a big deal in terms of his earnings.

Has anyone had a one-off charge like this and written to Natwest with any success? Any help would be much appreciated.

We had the same problem my usbandhad had an account with them for nearly 20 years and they would charge for being over drawn once by as little as 21p, i think thy charged £30, can't remember now but no need to say that we moved accounts and away from such charges.

One of my friends is a branch manager for NatWest - don't ask me why, it must be horrible job as I keep moaning at him for what a **** bank NatWest is:p and they don't get big bonuses. He is with NatWest 25 years now!! and he just got a present for the 25 years - 18'' TV. That is it.
So it must be only those big bosses who are having a party.
  • I have just received a letter from Halifax. I paid for something by Paypal and was £1.61 short and didn't realise they took this out of my bank account which left me 96 pence overdrawn. The Halifax want to cahrge me £35 for paying the £1.61 and £28 for going 96 pence overdrawn All in all £63 in charges for going 96p overdrawn.. I phoned but they said the amount you go overdrawn is not relevant so even 1p would have incurred £63 in charges. I know it's my own fault but blimey there should be a better system. .
  • I would give them a call, after all, there are ppl out there that go £100's overdrawn. I always phone if they slap a charge on me. They can see my situation and they are not helping when they do that. They have refunded everytime!!

It's so true, I'm sure it doesn't cost £28 to send a letter, and what prey tell is administration costs.

They have admins in banks, it's their job to type letters well actually the letters are pre set, so you just fill in the blanks accordingly (I used to be a temp working in a bank as admin), so it's not as if they had to hire someone in especially
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
  • I remember many years ago taking some money out at the bank and the cashier had a smirk on his face as he handed it over. Clocked it but thought nothing else of it. Anyway, that transaction took me a couple of pence over and I was slapped a fee. I managed to get it refunded. Always been extra careful since but it was my fault.

When I phoned to see if I could get my charges refunded, I noticed someting new on my online account "reserve amount". I queried this saying I nor husband had signed up to anything, was told oh know thats for if you go over you overdraft limit we will honour anything upto a 1000pounds and charge 22 for the privilege. So then I asked why I had been charged 30 oh well this is all new, stiil wasn't really happy changes to my account without being notified.

Think they need some common sense
