Do remember to scrub them well to remove the wax which is made from chemicals.Love living in a village in the country side0

I'll keep a few aside for recipes. Does anybody have a good orange sorbet recipe?:T
Orange sorbet
200g sugar
200 ml water
Place in saucepan and stir over low heat until sugar dissolved. Bring to boil and allow to boil rapidly for about 1 min. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Juice of approx 4 oranges
Couple of drops orange oil if you have it (optional)
Juice of 1 lemon (or equivalent of bottled lemon juice)
1/2 egg white whipped until almost stiff
To cooled sugar syrup, add orange juice, orange oil and lemon juice, then add egg white. Pour mixture into ice cream machine with paddle running, until desired consistency.
If you don't have ice cream maker, put into bowl, place in freezer, every 20 mins or so, break up the mixture with a fork. Place scoops in orange skins and refreeze. Remove from freezer about 10-15 mins before using.
I have made this quite successfully, albeit in ice-cream maker, but didn't use the egg white, and it was really nice. Also bunged in a wee drop of Cointreau at another time, which was extremely pleasant!0 -

Old gardening trick to get rid of snails and slugs is to put orange or grapefruit shells like an upside down cup in the flower beds/veg plot. The little beasties gather inside overnight and come morning you just 'dispose' of 'em !

How do they make the peel that you can get (either orange or lemon) that you buy to put in cakes?0

wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the slow cooker desserts thread but anyway it's a cheap, easy recipe
ORANGE BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING
8 slices bread from lge loaf
2 oz butter
2 level tbs orange marmalade
rind from 2 oranges, finely grated
pinch cinnamon or nutmeg
1 pt milk
2 lge eggs beaten
Cut crusts off bread and spread with butter and marmalade.
Put in 2 layers in lightly greased slow cooker pot sprinkling rind and spice between.
Warm milk in pan, stir in sugar and pour over eggs.
Pour mixture over bread.
Place sheet of greaseproof paper under lid to catch condensation and cook on LOW 3-4 hrs.0 -
Mmmmm, thanks Callyanna. I will have to try this soon.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

That sounds yummy!!!!
For anyone with an extremely sweet tooth, you might like the bread & butter pudding I made the other night (don't try it if you're on a diet LOL!).
I used the leftovers of a banana & pecan loaf that I'd made earlier in the week which and was going stale (waste not want not :money:) and gave me around 6 good slices. Buttered the slices and arranged in a bowl, layering with sultanas (any dried fruit will do). I made the custard (nicked from Gary Rhodes I think) by using 6 egg yolks whisked with 4oz caster sugar till pale ... heated 600ml half milk, half cream, with vanilla pod in a pan then poured into egg yolk mix, whisking as you add it. Poured this over bread and fruit and cooked in a ban marie in moderate over for 30-40 mins (till custard sets). Then sprinkle with caster sugar and place under grill till sugar caramelises and edges of bread burn
It was absolutely delicious but very sweet "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

i can't seem to find lemon pepper in the uk so i dry lemon peels out then grate them and mix them up with ground pepper though i am considering just cutting them into small chunks and putting in my pepper mill. orange pepper might be nice on chicken and/or vegetablesfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0
