naughty sites! virus?

when starting to type an www in the address bar on her hubby's pc, my sis was met with some very naughty sites being autocompleted
some of these were gay sites, which got my sis very upset

she approached her hubby and he assured her that he had never visited these sites (he showed her his history folder and there was none of the sites in there).

he said it must have been some sort of virus and he restored all of his pc.

has anyone heard of this type of virus?

This is not a virus as such, sounds like a hot search bar that has been downloaded, he may or may not have been visiting these sort of sites. Can usually be got rid of by - in Internet Explorer, clicking on tools - manage add ons and disabling anything that looks suspicious.
  • hi sunflower,

Must say I've never heard of this virus. Be interesting to see if the virus re-appears after his PC restore.
Ask your sis to quietly check his PC in a couple of weeks by seeing if anything naughty comes up again in autocomplete.

Has he installed any antivirus software?
  • yeah he is really really paranoid about viruses so tends to go over the top with software !!!

believe me - she is watching his pc antics like a hawk now

the toolbar suggestion sounds v possible - but you dont things like that from visiting the cartoon network website do ya?

Hi, Might be worth a try.

Go to Start/search (or find) and search for 'cookies'

Go to C:\Cookies and have a look. (You might have to move the de-limiter accross to read the full address).

You will find that a lot of visited sites leave a trace of themselves here.

    Happy investigations.

Things like this can come in with downloading eg. music (especially illegal downloading), games, so he isn't necessarily looking at sites. Also sites can be found by putting in innocent searches, she shouldn't be too suspicious as this happens all the time.

ive clicked on a google link once for capacitors (work related, im not that sad) and it came up with a drug site..which then opened popups to all sorts of !!!!!!..then installed some spyware/adware which changed my homepage.
If the man knows about pc and had looked at this sort of stuff im sure he would have deleted the history, cookies etc incase anyone did go on the pc
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • ...or even turned autocomplete off?

Every site visited will be stroed in a file called 'index.dat' even after 'cleaning or restoring'
you can get software to read the index.dat file and see who's been where.

I doubt very much that this is a toolbar, virii or trojan that is affecting autocomplete.
    Sorry to sound negative.

There is a "cool web" search virus that can take over your browser and link you automatically to !!!!!! sites. That could be the problem. But then they'd still be th eHistory folder too (unless deleted.) There is a download called cwshredder.exe that can get rid of it.
  • My girlfriend got on her PC (and I'm fairly certain she's not been visiting gay men !!!!!! sites....)

I ran spybot search and destroy on it and it found a number of little nasties. I suggest a spyware killing tool would do the trick....
