What's the deal?
Currently there are a raft of cheap internet phones on offer. These phones plug into your PC and allow you to call anyone completely free via the internet, provided you both have the same calling software e.g. Skype.
How to get free worldwide calls
It's fairly easy to set up free calls via the net. All you need is a PC made within the last 5 years-ish, an internet phone or headset and an internet connection. Broadband is best for quality but dial up will work too.
Both you and the person you're talking to need to have the same software installed, for example Skype. There's also nothing stopping you having more than one package on your PC if you want to talk to different people. For full information on how it works read the Voip: Completely Free Calls Worldwide Via Your PC article.

If you had mobile internet and had a VOIP phone and was away from home on a regular basis then this would be a cheap way of keeping in touch with people who also used VOIP depending on what monthly download contract you had.Always looking for a bargain and to help0

hi, i have been looking for a really straight-forward guide on this topic for ages! I think Skype is the most universally recognised application, but I am not sure? If anyone has any ideas on the best one to use - I have fring on my mobile (a nokia N70 on its last legs) please let me know - ideally for calling the UK in the UK, landlines, mobiles and 0870, 0845 numbers. Thanks!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Can l suggest that once you have tried Skype with a USB phone, that you consider a dual phone that plugs direct into your router if you have one, as this would mean that you can make and receive Skype calls without your PC on0

I am fed up with seeing Skype being promoted by you and all, as I get a bad taste in my mouth.
Don't get me wrong, it may be fine for using the free calling with your internet connection, but beware if you decide to use it for making calls to those friends that just have a normal phone.
You have to open a credit account with £10 min. that then deducts your call charge, the problem that I found is you pay "TWICE" once to Skype who very cheekily channel the call through YOUR landline (that is if you have one) and therefore pay again to your supplier,ok mine is Talktalk, who advised me that they are charged by BT for the calls I make via Skype:mad: .
I have accused both parties of conning me without any satisfaction, except ridding Skype from my PC for ever.0
