Just done the final shop for March which came to £59.22 but had a £5 voucher :j . This leaves us with £11.13 until next month. Hopefully we won't need to get anything else, just bananas (as always  ). We had nearly cleared out the cupboards and tonight we're having fish which I'll make into something edible. Saturday and Sunday we're at the inlaws for dinner so that's saved a bit, but they live in Herefordshire so that's about 5 hours drive away and they forecast snow. Must pack some blankets in the car as no doubt we'll get stuck in the bank holiday traffic.

This month has been a better spend for me - no takeaways because of my diet, but I do find myself getting a little irritable when there is a short supply of food in the house, is this just me or does anyone else feel like this?

Earlier today my youngest son and myself planted some carrots and tomatoes in an old egg box!! Hopefully when they start to grow we can transfer them into bigger pots - there's not much scope for a veggie patch in our garden. I think I'll bring them inside for the weekend as it's just started raining and if we're away they may die .

Have a great Easter everyone and be good or the Easter Bunny won't come to you :rotfl: .

Ooh, I've just been invited out for Sunday dinner! :T This is great as OH is away all weekend and my parents are currently on the plane to India (lucky things!). The only thing is it's lamb  And the friend is pregnant and was due on Monday so might not happen yet! Would help the budget though so fingers crossed...
Might go late night shopping tonight but depends on the weather...only need a few bits.

  • I've had a lovely day today, lots of cooking and no work :j

Started with a loaf of bread and some hm hot cross buns (not toffee topped this time). Used the left over pastry from the crosses to make jam tarts - used up lots of ends of jam from the fridge (cleared 2 jars out).

Then tried those iced fingers everyone is making - I can't believe they are so nice - the whole family liked them.

Also made a chocolate cake with mini eggs on top for Easter Sunday - MIL and FIL coming for lunch.

Have made some hm bath bombs for MIL for Easter rather than buy an egg. I will be making some peanut butter cookies for FIL for Easter - he loved the last batch I made and has been asking for more.

All in all a very frugal but productive day.

    FFM :)

  • Just popped in to update my sig, it's getting a bit close:eek: . I have however jammed in 4 x 4pints of cravendale into my freezer:o .
We were in Dundee today and I bought quite a few things at a chinese cash and carry. I got a HUGE bag of chinese 5 spice powder for £2.80, and a HUGE bag of star anaise for £1, bargain I thought.
We're getting pretty close to our target, but I don't need much this week apart from more cravendale:o before Tuesday as the offer ends then.
I have a huge duck in the freezer, I'm going to do Mrs M's duck reciepe including the pancakes if I can find the post! I can feel myself getting hungry at the thought, can't wait for Sunday!:j
Happy Easter to everyone, hope the bunny brings loads of chocolate;) .

If you've got an Asda near you, their wholemeal flour is 55p for 1.5kg, and in Lidl it's 48p if Tescos is too dear!

Martin look's more like a vampire than an easter bunny today, does anyone else find it a bit... disconcerting?

    Weezl x
No Asda for miles and to be honest I'm not a Walmart fan... but Aldi/Lidl may be a poss - the stoneground was yummy but about 90p.

    Martin looks very odd indeed......

    Here you go mortgagefreeforme...

just in case you can't find it ;)
    • 2.5 cups - 310g - 9 3/4oz plain flour
    • 2tsp caster sugar
    • 1 cup - 250ml - 8floz boiling water
    • 1tbsp sesame oil
    1. place flour and sugar in a bowl and pour over boiling water
    2. stir the mixture a few times and leave until lukewarm
    3. knead on a lightly floured surface to make a smooth dough
    4. cover and leave for 30mins
    5. roll it into a long sausage and cut into 20.. i weighed the mix and divided it and its roughly 25g if i remember correctly :p
    6. roll each into a ball and then into circles about 3" in diameter
    7. lightly brush one side of a disk with the sesame oil
    8. place another on top and roll until about 6" in diameter
    9. repeat so that you have 10 "double" pancakes
    10. heat a dry frying pan and place one pancake in..
    11. when bubbles appear, turn over and cook the 2nd side -press down with a clean tea towel
    12. they should puff up when done
    13. drop on a plate and when cool enough to handle they will peel apart
    14. keep them covered to save drying out
I know it sounds long winded but its very simple and quick to do ;)

You can make them in advance too, and to re-heat either steam them wrapped in a clean tea towel, or wrap in foil and place in a medium oven for a couple of minutes

I went to an Asian supermarket the other day thanks to Egon :D ..and they had so many different kinds of wrap.. in huge packs..but i convinced myself i am better of making them ;) .. but the spices n stuff were brilliant...deffinitely going back there soon :D
