Are there really any bargains though?

Just before Christmas I bought my OH a nice mp3 player. I compared prices online and paid £99.99 for it from Amazon (and luckily took advantage of a free set of travel speakers worth £20.00 too)

We flew out of Gatwick on Christmas Eve so we wandered into Dixons to see what accessories they might have for the mp3 player. They had the mp3 player tax free - at 17.5% off of the rrp of £129.99 - bringing the price down to around £107.00. Even with the £5.00 voucher mentioned above it would still have been more expensive to purchase it duty free.

I can't imagine that this is an isolated example. I should think anyone planning on purchasing duty free electrical items really ought to check prices available online before they travel to ensure that their duty free 'bargain' is just that.
  • Thanks guys

Incapuppy I am doing price searching/haggling now to see if I can get it cheaper than I will at the airport!

I think it will be a list of make up then ;-))

    .....
IMHO, or rather based on my own experiences, Dixons airport outlets are anything but cheap and anything they do sell is available cheaper in the UK. :)

Ciggies are extremely cheap in Mumbai and Delhi airports if you're a smoker- about £1.50 for 20 I believe. We're not, but have friends who do smoke - they are excellent hosts and repay us in food and drink :D

If you're sporty, cricket and hockey equipment/clothing (don't know about other sports) is very cheap in India. DH always comes back with lots of stuff for our sons.

    Hi There

Coming from an IT background I know my pricing quite well. Whenever I fly I always check out electronics in DF. I can’t believe how expensive things are… Even compared to high street shops. My advice when it comes to DF only buy your Alcohol and cigarettes and forget about everything else.

If your after things like camcorders and cameras. Do what I do and find the gadget I want then start with the internet and get the best price. Every now and then I don’t feel like buying on the net so I take a print out of the web price and take it to my local high street and get them to price match.. I’ve done that many times on Tottenham Court Road, and often got a better deal or some kind of freebee

Finally do not buy any electronic devices in India, your asking for trouble. But clothes and fine art things are plentiful and cheap so long as you know where to look.

    Regards

    Jag

    Dixons beats Dixons Tax Free!

I'm looking at buying the Canon 450D digital SLR camera.

Their tax free website advertises the Canon 450D at £539.99 - "a savings of £80 over the high street price" they say.

Except, right below the price it says "High Street Price £459.58".

    Brilliant at maths, huh!

Worse, their non-taxfree site (a "high street") advertises the same product for £514.83 -- cheaper than tax free! But still not quite the £459.58.
    -> !!!!!!! See tiny url com/595sn2

Even worse (for their silly manager; better for us consumers), there is a non-taxfree bundle at the same £514.83 which includes a bag (a £13 value).

I think I'll shop elsewhere, anyway...

On the other hand, it's not ALWAYS that bad. I bought my Sony PSP in Dixons Tax Free (was just flying domestic) at Edinburgh airport last year for £110 or so whilst EVERYWHERE else, the internet, the highstreet, the lot, was selling for £129 at cheapest.

I phoned up the Dixons tax free prior to departure when i was doing my research, and reserved it a few days before so that I knew it was there waiting for me. They're always happy to tell you the price (tho it could change before you fly)!

I'd agree, u2o, friend bought the Asus EEE at Dixon's in Edinburgh airport for £180 odd compared to £220 in the shops.

They've updated their site since I told them of this mad math.

:T And would you believe, they actually are selling it cheaper than anywhere I've found online or offline! They had simply swapped the numbers.

A Canon EOS 450D for £459.58 from them vs eBuyer at £505.21 (18 May 2008).
