Tax Credits Renewal Deadline

What's it about?

If you're receiving working tax credit or child tax credit, then you need to renew it annually. Failure to do so can cause problems with allocation and we already know there are enough hassles in the tax credit system.

When's the cut-off?

You need to renew by 30 September

How do I renew?

Read your annual review form then fill in the annual declaration. If you've already registered with the online tax credits service you can do this online. If you've a paper one you need to send it quickly.

This put me in a panic when I first read it, could not remember having been sent any forms recently, but have now realised that the forms came months ago, I sent them back and got a new award notice (basically the same as last year) ages ago as well. Phew!

    But a useful reminder Martin!

For those who dont know.If you havent completed your tax return, you give the tax credit folk your estimate of your earnings. You then have to give your actual earnings total by the end of january.
Its easy to renew your claim by phone as well.Regards, Elaine

  • Just done this online, after a shaky start when I couldn't remember my log-in name icon11.gif
  • HI
I filled my forms in about august, and had a bill back for almost £500, that i owe them, and i am not entitled to child tax as my son has left collage now, it says within a month, but you can arrange to pay it over 12 months.
I am on the sick at present, and am only getting incapacity benefit,am on my own with my son, so really not able to pay it back just yet!!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes i wish i had loads of savings, but they take that into account, so would be no better of i suppose, my friend says its 6,000 before they touch you is this correct, and do they really look in the bank, to see what you have????? good job i don't have to pay rent/morgage i think.
I hear that lots of people have had bills from tax credit?????
  • We rang the tax credit people and they said that as nothing had changed for us there was no need to send back any paperwork. Think we'll ring again just to be sure!

The paperwork I received for child tax credit said I only had to notify them if my circumstances or income has changed. It quotes if your circumstances are unchanged, your payments will continue.

As our income is the same I have not contacted them, now after reading the information posted by Martin I am not sure what to do. Is anyone else in this position of no change to circumstances.

Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  • We automatically received a letter with details of the next years awards, it says we only need to contact them if anything changes.

We have had nothing but trouble with tax credits people over the last 3-4 yrs.

Firstly they offered us a massive amount of money each year, on questioning this they told us it was correct and not to worry- over a year later they told us we had paid too much and owed them over £2000! Nothing we ca do about it- although they take it monthly.

Recently we changed bank accounts- phoned them 2 times before payments due to make sure account is correct- and 2 months running they paid the money into an old bank account! (apparently they changed my partners bank details but didnt change mine as I didnt ring them myself- and as I'm default on the account the payment comes to my account.)

All I can say is double check every detail, otherwise you will get stung.
  • I rang the helpline Sunday. The lady confirmed I have to tell them my income details by 30th September - but she said she would accept an estimate, which I gave her.

No mention of having to confirm this at a later date.

I am certain you have to give actual figures by the end of january. Check again.
