This came from FurryGoat who got it from Sanjay's Coding Tips who found it at Darrell Norton's blog. It's a short list of things to do to speed up the launching of Adobe's Reader
machine upgrade...It is all the plug-ins that are enabled by default slowing Acrobat reader down. After removing all but 3, it loads pretty much instantly.
Here's how to do it: VERY SIMPLE!! VERY EFFECTIVE!!
Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (replace the C if you installed on another drive, like I did).
Create a new folder called plug_ins_disabled.
Move all files from the plug_ins folder to the plug_ins_disabled folder except EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api.
There should only be these 3 files in the plug_ins folder.
You're done.
Enjoy.

Tried this with reader 7, seems to work although there does not seem to be a Print-me.api. Left both search api's where they should be.

Does this apply to Acrobat reader 7.0 folder too? I have Acrobat 7 professional and in the program files I have 2 folders : Acrobat 6.0 and Acrobat 7.0? Wondering whether to alter settings in both folders or just 7.0? Thanks.
[edit] figured it out thanks!0 -

I use this for viewing PDFs
From http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
Get the program here unzip and run the program. I have it as my default PDF viewer.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/pdfrd.zip
Foxit Reader is small (the download size less than 1MB), so you can download it quickly. It doesn't need any lengthy installation, so you can start to run it as soon as you can download it.
And it starts up immediately, so you don't need to wait the annoying "Welcome" screen to disappear.
Foxit Reader is extremely easy to use, just double click it to start and then click open button to open your PDF document. If you want to print, click on "Print" button. If you want to setup the page layout for printing, select "Print Setup" from "File" menu.
Foxit Reader runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP/2003. It is provided by Foxit Software Company for free non-commercial use. This product is provided AS IS without any explicit or implicit warranty.
What's New: Version 1.3: Type on ANY document!
Version 1.2: Find text in document!
Version 1.2: Select text and copy!
Eastern Asian Language Support: Foxit Reader supports Chinese/Japanese/Korean character sets, but you will need to download an additional support package named "FPDFCJK.BIN" (about 1.8MB)...
Free PDF Create no need for Acrobat Pro Distiller etc...
For creating PDF from any Windows application, and for "printing out" confirmation slips etc to PDF (eg. on a wireless laptop or anywhere you do not have a real printer, or want to waste paper / ink) is use the Free (GPL) PDF Creator.
Project site here:
http://sector7g.wurzel6.de/pdfcreator/index_en.htm
Download here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?type=prdownload&group_id=57796&ugn=pdfcreator&package_id=53473&release_id=228013&file_id=489770
If you want a network printer that produces PDF (so there is no software to install and everyone in an office can use it, try the PDF Printer ad ons for SME server at contribs.org) I have one set up it works a treat. Again all Free (GPL) software works Mac, Windows, Linux.Seth.0
