old stylers up in arms!

please note the deliberate pun
in response to the thread HERE
and in light of reasons outlined in said thread, and numerous others on the board in recent weeks, would it please be possible for the old stylers to have a subforum where they can conduct their slightly chattier posts but amongst familiar faces?

just to make it easier for those who cant be bothered to trawl through the thread, i've C&P'd one of my posts below outlining why we are calling for a subforum.as far as i can see there seems to be 2 issues that are bothering people here
1. for all the good will in the world on their half, over zealous board guiding
2. the chat area for old stylers.
IMHO, the issue with this old style chat arena HAS and in in essence still is
that
a) as noted by the big cheese himself, old style has a unique flavour that he would like to see preserved
b) rightly or wrongly, people tend to stick to the boards that are most pertinent to their lives, and in doing so get to know a certain range of posters rather well.
c) people generally do not and are not likely to wander into other foums on the board that they see to have no bearing on their life.
d) the moneysavers arms is one of those boards with a very unique atmosphere, frequented by a set few. as a result, there are in-jokes, leavig many feeling out of the circle, and unless you take the time and patience to fully integrate yourself into such a group, it inevitably ends up looking clique-y to an outsider (though this is one of the most un-clique-y and most welcoming boards around).
e) as a result of point d), most people are put off going in there to socialise, because it is like trying to become part of your boyfriend/girlfriends social circle, who have known each other since time began, and as far as they are concerned, you have only existed since lunchtime on thursday when they met you for drinks. (i know they dont mean to be unwelcoming or intimidating, it just feels that way sometimes)
f) like the arms, old style is also frequented by its regular group of sad people with no lives who roam the internet all day (), only seeking daylight to replenish their stocks of vinegar and chicken feed. in a similar style, there are in-jokes, a sense of belonging, family almost if you will.
g) in light of points a) through f) is it really that hard to understand why people on this forum dont want to have their coffee shop 'shoved' into a corner of the arms, or restricted to one thread that is already far to long and impossible to follow? (on a side point, another board i am a member of attempted a similar thing, and after opening the third version of the thread because the others got too long and wouldnt load properly, caused PCs to crash etc, they admitted defeat and opened a subforum)
h) the reason people are calling for a subforum is because they want somewhere to go and do the 'my cat's just brought me home a dead bird about the size of a pigeon...how long do you think it will take in the slow cooker?'/ 'is peas and sweetcorn better than peas and carrots with x?'/ how gloopy is your laundry gloop?/'how much is that HM choccie cake from so-and-so's recipe? type random /crazy /banal /meaningless /entertaining /coffee-over monitor-spurt-inducing stuff that deviates from the salient issues being discussed in the main forum (these type of things seeming to be the cause of irritation to those that have complained about the chattiness of the board ?)
i) as noted by the big cheese, there is a unique and special atmosphere to old style, its not a case of being anti-social and not wanting to mix with other memebers on the board, its about being able to go somewhere where you know you can discuss the things that have happened/are important to you without having to EXPLAIN why the fact that you have run out of vinegar and the shops wont be open for another 3 days cos its a bank holiday is such a disaster, or why you loose sleep at night over the lack of gloop to your HM laundry mush, and why your slow cooker would be the first in line to back the 48 hour directive (slow cookers deserve a rest too! )
what the old stylers want is a place where they will get implicit understanding about the way they choose to live their lives.
j)no matter what time of day you log on, there is always always always something going on in this forum, and i would bet my hat that it is one of the most popular and subscribed to forums on the board. consequently, is the demand for a subforum really that unreasonable? its not as if it wouldnt get used?
is this really that hard to understand? does a subforum really need to be that much of an issue?

I would like to support the idea of a old style sub-forum & in light of recent old style tensions, thank Pavlovs for being brave enough to formally raise the request.
The recent old style Q & A thread & the length of the old style coffee shop thread indicate (at least to my way of thinking) that something slightly more structured is needed where everyone is welcome but is in keeping with the old style way of life. Unfortuntely, try as we might, some of us haven't been able to find our feet in the Arms (sorry regulars, nothing personal) and we are seeking an alternative without wishing to cause further friction  .
Many thanks to the powers that be for considering our request & to the Old style board guides (both old & new) for being so patient with us.
And now I'm signing off on the subject;)Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
Personally I don't see a problem with how it runs at the moment  but I'm not saying that you don't have a point concerning newcomers....:whistle:Make Hay While The Sun Shines:think:0

What is it with all the chat stuff sprouting everywhere, the old style has worked ok up till now ,relaxed and chatty but not silly is how it was intended.
If we start having sub-forums on there ,then they will be required on all sorts of boards and where will it stop
The arms is for chatting and silly stuff and discussions is for the serious (slightly) stuff........................
I've noticed a cafe has now opened in silver savers........................and discussing Live 8......................we have a discussion board doing exactly that..................why are we suddenly spreading everything around the board,it's quite simple really
discussions are for discussions
the arms is for chat/silly stuff
and the rest is for moneysaving with a few ,by their very nature, being more relaxed than others....................................we're in danger of messing about with the boards too much and spoiling it all together.................
just my opinion .....................leave it alone,it's worked ok up till now and don't over police it:rolleyes:0 -
There are a lot of requests for new forums and i think a lot of them have been quite good ideas
but I also see the argument against them. Some of the biggest forums on the internet have half as many boards as we do.
The quick-jump menu at the bottom is already very long - and us BGs have to use a similar menu to move posts. Many a time I've had to scroll up and down that list for ages trying to find a board
If you don't get a new forum another idea might be to have some kind of code using post icons. They're very under-used.
E.g. you could have all chatty threads havenext to them.
BG's would have to enforce it strictly - Tony H tried something similar withfor 'problems solved' on the techie board a while back but it doesn't work unless everyone participates - Maybe it could work on a community-board like old style

If I felt it needed reporting ,trust me I would of felt free to do so ...........however as I haven't reported it I presume that doesn't bar me from making a comment on it ..............or does it0 -
Personally I think a chat area for Old Style is very appropriate. It wouldn't be for silly discussions, jokes etc...but more likely to be for what people are going to make for tea, or what they are growing in their garden / allotment. At the moment a lot of these threads are within the main Old Style discussion forum and it would make it a lot easier for the BGs to manage if they were sent off to a Old Style Coffee Shop. All the Old Style tips, recipes etc... could stay put, and so be easier for people to find when they need them.
We want to talk about various old style related topics, but don't feel they are appropriate to put within the main old style forum. However, they aren't also appropriate within the Arms.
Can't we please have a sub-forum...it would makes things a lot better for us Old Stylers.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

but oldstyle has always been like that ,where discussions on old style topics have been in the same threads as recipes etc ,then the recipes collated later on...............I can't understand why 'what people are going to make for tea' needs to be in a seperate forum......................but heythat's just my opinion
