i remember as a child seeing my boy relations having patches sewn on their battered jeans to cover holes in trouser legs, knees in particular. i need something similar to these patches. i went through a phase of the very dangerous smoking in bed and have quite a few nightie casualties with small burn holes to show for it. i have given this habit up but hate seeing the incident reminding me. so far the only place in london i have seen these things are in haberdashery department of john lewis, little hears and butterflies etc unfortunately costing between £1.50 and £2.50 each. ebay have only collector item ones and looking on a search on the net provides a few more but still quite expensive. does anyone have a moneysaving ideas????? would be most grateful. i can sew a little and so do not need to be the iron on ones... thanks

I have used iron-on repair fabric in the past, sold in Woolies, Wilkos, Supermarkets etc & in a range of very basic colours. It comes in a about a 30CM square & you just cut to fit. Not terribly attractive but does the job, also works for holes in pockets;)

If you find a suitable piece of material with small flowers, butterflies etc on it - then you can cut out small motifs and then applique them to garment yourself."This site is addictive!"

Hi homealone,
Do you have a market nearby? I have seen some on a haberdashery stall in a market - they usually look as if they have been around for a while so the packaging is a bit tatty!0 -
elona's idea is one I have used to great effect.
Do you have a sewing machine and if so, does it do satin stitch? You would then be able to use matching thread colour or contrasting and "darn" over the area with satin stitch (if you practise on a scrap of fabric, you may even create your own small shapes).
If you cross stitch, you could buy a little piece of "waste canvas" and put a small x stitch design over the burn holes (the waste canvas is pulled out afterwards, just leaving the x stitch).~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Help ! my daughter has come home from school with a huge hole in her new school trousers, I've tried sewing it but its a large hole & its right at the front (on the knee). Does anyone know if you can get iron on patches for this sort of thing ? I've googled & found some "heavy duty" ones but dunno if these would be suitable for typical cotton school trousers. I really don't want to bin them as theyve hardly been worn :mad:0

I recently bought a pair of iron-on patches for my sons denim dungarees. At £4.99 for a pair it would almost have been cheaper to buy him a new pair of dungarees:mad: On thinking about it, I could have made the damn patches myself from an old pair of jeans & some wonderweb:rolleyes: Do you have an old pair of the school trousers, last years prehaps, which you could cut up & use?
My addational advice, if you do get the proper iron on patches, sew them as well as iron them as they aren't very "sticky"

If it's a tear rather than a hole (that is, if it's thin and long instead of being a big 'O' shape), you can get iron-on repair tape at the supermarket which works fairly well - I mostly use it to fix seams and don't need to sew it, but for a hole I'd probably try sewing and ironing just to be sure.
I got mine at Morrisons for £1.99. It came with strips (about 2 inches wide and maybe 6 inches long) of white, grey, and black, and some of the packs had navy instead of either the grey or the black.0 -
no its not a tear (unfortunately), its a hole about 3/4" diameter. blooming typical on the new pair !0

I got my patches from a little habadashery shop, anywhere which sells fabric or wool might stock them but a specific habadashers or somewhere like John Lewis with a big department almost certianly will have a selection. I saw denim & suade ones, didn't see cotton ones although I wasn't specifiically looking for them. I know I've bought iron on cotton pocket replacements for my hubbys work trousers in the past so these might be an adaptable possability! I'd say find somewhere with a big department or a shop & take the damaged trousers with you & ask their advice, they are usually very knowledgable people.
Good luck.;)Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
