Rosehips!

I have a rosehip tree at the end of my allotment - its currently growing rosehips merrily, about the only thing managing to grow on the whole plot
Anyone know what they are useful for? I know you can make rosehip tea but what is it good for and how du make it?
Apparently the tree is important for keeping away evil spirits so hopefully when I do get my plants in they will be safe from the creatures of the night -trolls, ghosties, banshees and slugs!!

Rosehip syrup - YUM! Don't I seem to remember tho' that the seeds inside the hips are a bit itchy - I think we used them as itching powder when we were kids!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

I DO very much like the idea of Rose-hip honey... mmm...
I love honey - add it to everything a bit like ketchup!
(obviously I dont put it on chips! ) Will get a nice jar of organic honey from Spittlefields market - would make a great present if I dressed it up and made it look pretty.
Does anyone know how you can tell when the rosehips are ripe?I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!

Rosehip oil is an ingredient in some of the most expensive skin care products, as it's supposed to be superb for fine lines, wrinkles and scarring. It's used in eye creams and anti-aging products. I won't buy those, I just use organic rosehip oil neat around my eyes - it's dirt cheap!!
Though I'm not sure how you convert the fresh berries into a beauty product, I did read that drinking rosehip tea has a similar positive effect on skin from the inside as using a rosehip product on the outside - makes sense, I guess! And I imagine that other rosehip recipes would give similar good properties?...
Here is a bit of info on growing and harvesting rosehips, including a recipe for Rosehip Marmalade and rosehip tea.
On ripeness it says: "Rose hips ripen after they are touched by the first fall frost. The color of rose hips varies, but in general, orange hips are not quite ripe, and deep red hips are overripe. Overripe hips are sweet, but have lost much of their vitamin C."0 -
That all sounds lovely!
My only experience of rosehips is rosehip syrup, which my mum used to give to us mixed with water (like squash) when we were really tiny - probably the first thing we ever drank other than breast milk, before moving on to Ribena! Obviously I don't remember ever having it myself but I remember my mum tempting my sister and brother at very early ages with "yummy rosehip syrup"...Operation Get in Shape

I've collected about 4lbs of rosehips and intend to make syrup. obviously this means that there'll be the minced rosehips left when the syrup has been made. Any ideas on what I could do with them after that? I made blackberry jam from blackberries I already used to make blackberry whisky and it's brill, not so confident about the rosehips though. My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

I'm not sure you can use the leftovers because of the little barbs that are inside the hip - they're an irritant. Your recipe for syrup should involve boiling and straining the hips twice to get rid of the barbs0
