Bicarbonate of soda, where to buy in bulk please?

Hello everyone. I've been a lurker for quite a while but cant keep silent anymore! :rotfl:

I've read a few times that people are finding bicarb at their local chemist in larger amounts but i'm having no luck at all. I keep buying the weedy little cooking size tubs at 50ish pence and these dont last two minutes!

Also, the white vinegar, I buy 5 litres in Makro for around £3.45 but would love to find it less than £2 and wondered if any of you lucky people who get it cheap live in the Leicestershire area and can point me to a shop!

Thanks for a great board, if it wasnt for this place, I wouldnt know the joys of microfibre!! :T

Hi Judi and many thanks for the posts.

I am actually a soapmaker and never thought about the soap sites!! I will order in bulk next time I need soap supplies otherwise shipping can work out expensive.

I only really have vinegar, bicarb and microfibre cloths in my washing cupboard now and the house has never been cleaner!

    Thank you again :-)

Hi Leonie, welcome to the board :hello:

I'm interested in your soap making, is it easy? Do I need to buy special stuff? I've got bicarb. I might just make some for the pamper kit on the wedding gift thread.

Hi everyone and thanks for the replies, I shall look for an indian/chinese supermarket in my area and stock up. I am looking for some good coconut milk so maybe I can get everything in one go! I go through gallons of vinegar, bicarb etc so bulk buying is the way to go.

Galtizz it depends what you are looking to do really. The fancy soaps you see on the site Troo mentions are melt and pour soaps. These are a ready made bases that you simply add your fave ingredients such as shea butter, mango butter etc. You can make wonderful designs etc. I make cold process soaps which are soaps that are made from scratch by the soapmaker. These are made from ingredients like olive oil, coconut oil etc. These are very gentle and are really good for your skin as they dont include any additives etc. Be careful if considering melt and pour soaps and find out what is in the base because some of them include lots of preservatives, colours etc so may not be as good for your skin as you would like.

I love making cold process soaps and use things like fresh carrots for the colour and exotic oils to make them gentle and moisturising to the skin. Its a wonderful hobby, I love making up new recipes. Family and friends love the soaps and I can make wonderful gifts at Christmas etc, personalised to the person!

Thanks Leonie, any chance of sharing your secret recipe for your cold process soaps? Do I need a soap maker machine or can I just make it in a marg tub or something?
