OLDSTYLE 5 Commandments

1. Do we really, really need it?
2. Is it going to be worth the cost of buying it and maintaining it, and the space to store it?
3. Can I make one/borrow one/buy one secondhand?
4. Who's trying to sell it to me, and what's in it for them?
5. It may be stylish, but I do actually like it? Enough to live with it for ten years? Does it go with the rest of my stuff?

any more folks??

Could not agree more with you.
One that I use. Is am I going to wear it/use it more than a couple times. If the answer is yes then I get it. one example is my electric steamer. We use that 3/4 times a week. Saves me putting on the cooker and means I can walk away and leave it to cook while doing other jobs. On my 3rd in about 6 years. but now only buy the cheap ones as they do last as well as the more expensive ones.
Another one is to say this cost X and it will take me Y hours to pay for it. Makes you really think about buying something.

One thing that I've started to do, is to leave it for a week or so. This only works when you know the item isn't going to be impossible to find later of course. But because I give myself time to think about the purchase more often than not I change my mind in the days that follow. I go from anticipation to looking forward to buying this thing, to uncertainty and finally a realisation that I probably wouldn't use it anyway.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

I have been dithering for weeks about whether to buy a breadmaker - but as it will also do dough for pizza - cakes - rolls etc. - I have decided to go ahead as I believe that I can justify it - also if it keeps me out of the supermarket then that will be a blessing.
If the fuel protests start up again it will be invaluable as with flour etc in cupboard I will not have to panic. :j"This site is addictive!"

I have started to do that as well put off purchases.
I have been wondering if I should get a slow cooker. I rarely cook meat and joints anyway.
I have £10 in amazon vouchers so I am still wondering if I should do it or just keep waiting. And by the time I have enough to pay for it in one go I might well have gone off the idea.

Ah well I knew I was no use as an Old Style user.
Pretty good as a moneysavingexpert as I follow Martin's mantra by saving money on the things that I can which then allows me to spend on the things that I want to :money:0 -

He he he he:D We're all cut from the same cloth and it's got Ol'Style printed all over it;) Gone are the days when I'd rush down the shops with me credit card between me teeth just cos something had broken or was past its best or I just fancied a new one.
So far since joining Ol'Style I have NOT replaced
My food processor (I have a big kenwood for mixing and a hand mixer for whipping etc) I only miss my processor when making meatloaf/stuffing
Estimated saving £40-50
My Microwave. I was seriously tempted with some on special offer at Aldi but there is nothing wrong with my 20yr+ panasonic and who needs more than full power and defrost anyway
Estimated saving £45
My Hoover. A nice new one with cyclonic whatsit would be nice but my ol orange vax which remembers Mrs T at no 10 still does the job.
Estimated saving £80-100
Two videos machines that are on the blink. I never have time to watch live telly never mind stuff I've taped and the kidz watch DVD's.
Estimated Saving £100
I do however, need to replace my PC chair which seems to have become very worn over the last year as if someone were sitting on it for prolonged periods of time:rolleyes:Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
currently I just avoid the shops, and online shopping (apart from the supermarket) - I have more then enough clutter in my place to last a life time....clutter that used to be called desired items....the struggle I'm having to get rid of it puts me off EVER buying anything again!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:
now I really need to get off the computer and tidy things up....but how, I think my fingers are glued to the keyboard!!!! :eek:0 -
Murtle...something we've done to rid ourselves of the things we don't need is to carboot it. Its amazing what people will buy. We put all the things we don't want in boxes out of the way and my OH every so often spends Sunday morning at the carboot. Less clutter, and cash in your hand at the same time.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
