I would contact your council. Our local council has a scheme whereby locals can buy a compost bin for around £10. Other's offer them free. I'd give them a call, or send them an email and I'm sure that they would be able to tell you if there is any such scheme in your area.

Don't forget to pee on it.

    I'm not kidding, honest :)

It has to do with the lime in your er, production, which helps the composting process. The tip is to use a bucket, dilute with water to about four to one {so it doesn't burn things) and just do this every now and then to help keep your compost moist.

I would reiterate the wee factor, the nitrogen helps the stuff break down. Im sure eggshells are useful in composting but i dont know why exactly. You can get nitrogen rich plant food in poundland, in big bags which last for ages, if you don't fancy the wee thing. You can get biodegradable disposable nappies, one of my friends used those so theres a nappy in there somewhere rotting away too:) Add anything plant matter wise, and shredded paper, wool blankets, if its natural it will rot.
Leave the top off from time to time if you have a lidded bin, to let it breathe and let the rain in, then shut it again so it gets nice and hot and steamy. my kids have a dilemma now where to put the worms they love to collect - in the compost bin or feed them to the chickens!
