I've not been to the barbers for years as my other half trims me up but had all my grandchildren here last week and was pleased to see my MSE instincts are hereditary and they are trimmed by my daughters. Not only saving little boys haircuts at £7.50 a time but also the ability to time the haircut to the opportune moment.
Just one haircut and your showing a profit.

PS although one of my daughters is quite "crafty" and would be expected to make a good trimmer, the other isn't and her haircutting efforts looked just as good to me. I'm quite sure if my two can manage it, you can do better.

I've been cutting my OHs hair for a few years now and have just invested in some Wahl clippers. They're Grrrrrrrreat!

I've gone from using the clippers all over to just clipping the back and sides and buying some hairdressing scissors to chop into the top as he has a kinda mohecan thing going on. I also use a hair catching shawl so I don't have to sweep up ;)

I reckon he must owe me a few hundred quid by now
Just run, run and keep on running!

  • My other half has always clipped his own hair - not difficult because he's a baldy bonce, so he only has to do round the sides! :D Unfortunately he also clips my youngest's hair ... poor little soul already looks the spit of his Dad, and has a very high forehead, so once he's been got at with the clippers he looks even more like him, bless.

My eldest, on the other hand, has very thick hair like me, and it is virtually impossible to cut with the clippers. Fortunately, and in true money-saving style (for me at least) my ex-hubby takes him for a haircut whenever he's having his own done.

As for me, my hairdresser is a friend, so it's super-cheap!

I've also cut Mr TM's hair for years and now we have 2 boys, they also get the DIY haircut. TBH, my boys look tidier than my friend's boys and she's a hairdresser, because she never gets round to doing their hair :D

So, all the more money for me to spend on my own lucious locks. Well, not strictly true, I colour my own hair if I want to and have a cut 4/5 times a year.

What's a barbers??? My 9 & 10yo have never seen inside one, let alone sat in one of the chairs!

Clippers were one of the first things I persuaded dh to purchase years ago (he has hair like a brillo pad and his former "trusty barber" used to cut his hair in such a way it made him look weird! (YUK!)

I soon sheared him and eventually, he learned to do it himself :D (possibly after the domestic where I threatened to give him the equivalent of a bikini wax with it?)

We invested in clippers after the hairdressers stopped doing wet mens cuts and said my husband and son had to have their hair washed, cut and blowdried at a cost of £18 each! Daughter has long hair so dosn't need it cut very often so all the savings can be spent on my hair!:)

I did hubbie's hair two days ago and it looked O.K. - Unfortunately he decided to tidy up the back of his head himself when I was out and looks very strange with a bald chunk!

Tried to repair some of the damage myself this morning!

    He does not learn! :):):)

We bought clippers about 5 years ago fro £18. I do hubbys hair and it is not to bad a job.

Mind you would think that after all this time I would be expert but sadly not. If there is a special occasion that we have to go to. I let hubby grow his hair and then go to the barbers. At about £6 a time. But he only goes once or twice a year max. And as his hair grow quick and is thick I have to clip his every 4/5 weeks.

And as mine is long and straight I just get hubby to trim the edges off for me when I do his  As I have longer hair I know they will charge me more so don't go.

I went to a proper hair dressers a couple of years ago and was not impressed so didn't bother again.

OH has really thick hair and, although the clippers go through a few times after a while (like 5 cuts) they jam up and wont cut. I used to buy clippers because we still saved a bit of money but after buying and throwing away 3 lots of clippers :o it just seemed so wastful so he's been going to the barbers.

Has anyone tried sharpening them themselves? Is it easy to do?

I oil them after every use and undo the screws and get all the hair out with a (old) toothbrush. Is there anything else I can do to keep them maintained?

They do get blunt after a while. The ones we used on horses had to be sent off to be sharpened regularly but I forget where we sent them now. Sorry not much use am I :D
