Saving money on chicken

Hi
Just a quick one that i use to save money, rather than buing those oh so expensive cuts of chicken portions, i've come to realise that simply by buying a fresh whole chicken and cutting the portions myself I get better sized portions without the added cost.
for example one decent sice organic chicken costs about £9, but by portioning it up i can get 4 good meals off it (2 breast, 2 thighs), in addition i can freeze the rest of the body and wings and drumsticks for use in soups that last 3/4 meals in them selves and of course can be frozen as well, and these bits are great for making stocks as well for other meals.
Ok i could save more by buying value, but i do like my chicken to tast like, well chicken, not whatever they pump into the value and frozen stuff.
hope it helps.

Delia online, has a page in her cookery school that shows just how easy it is to joint a chicken.

Totally agree. I never buy cheap non-free range chicken, because of all the water and chemicals they pump into the "meat" once it has been slaughtered to increase the weight. Ever wondered how of the chicken price you pay is actually for water so that they can make more profit? Ever wondered how they get the water to stay inside the meat for long enough for the shopper to get it home? Yuk! Same goes for bacon BTW.
I would much rather pay a bit more for a whole organic chicken and then make 3-4 meals out of it. Remember that the liver is delicious fried with a bit of port and spread on toast - tasty snack for the chef!
This is one of the reasons I have concerns about the sticky grocery thread - it encourages people to buy cheap crappy meat that tastes like nothing at all, rather than buying decent food and making it go a bit further.
I also joint my own ducks, geese etc and even had a go at a wild rabbit the other day (Jointing it was fun but the meat tasted crap!)0 -

How did you cook it? I only ever casserole it.
I fry garlic, onions and chilli paste (just a tiny bit of chilli), then add diced game and brown it slightly. I add chopped peppers and courgettes, cook them for a few mins. I then add a tin of chopped tomatoes, some sugar, a piece of cinnamon stick, a bay leaf, and some freshly ground black pepper. I simmer that down and added some vegetable stock and some madeira. Let it simmer for as long as you feel it needs.

Rabbit doesn't have a particularly strong "gamey" flavour and can often be mistaken for chicken (isn't everything!) and the first time I ever cooked it, when the kids were little, they did in fact think it was chicken (I'd never have got them to eat it had they known it was rabbit!)
A good tip to remember when skinning a bunny is to start at the bottom and work up, so when you get up to the neck you can pull the skin over the head. That way you don't have to look bunny in they eye while chopping his head off"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

LOL I'll be sure to remember that.
P.S. What are you doing up at this time of night?

That is the last thing i want. The weekend we went to stay with friends in Nottingham, came back Sunday afternoon. Most people want their Sunday dinner on a Sunday afternoon, but not my man - it was straight into the nearest bikers cafe for a full english, the bacon must have been a bit off, cause i felt a bit queer after i tried it, and i can still taste it now. Me guts aint been right since.:o
The bikes were nice though.:DThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
