Softening hard sugar?

Sainsburys delivered my shopping as usual this morning but the bag of sugar I ordered is all hard down one side. I can tip some of it out but it must have got moist at some point because half the bag is rock hard! Is there anything I can do or must I hack at it with a knife!!!!

I must admit my first thought was to return it to Sainsbury's for a refund and a replacement, but that might not be practical, plus you might need to use it straight away.
The only other thing I can suggest is to use the sugar you have been able to pour out, call Sainsbury's for a refund straight away, and a replacement the next time they deliver, and keep chipping away at the hard stuff in the hope that it separates a bit.
Sorry, that wasn't really all that helpful, but it's all I could think of, and your post was looking a little lonely with no replies yet ;-)

Thanks Maggie. I would have returned it straight away if I could but my husband is using the car today and I was completely out of sugar (need it for my cup of teas!). I may ring up and complain but have done that a lot lately because of money they haven't credited for substitutes I sent back and Im sick of phoning them!0

Put the sugar in a bowl and cover it with a clean damp cloth. I do this with brown sugar and after a few hours it's soft enough to crumble.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0

I think I read somewhere that you should put a piece of bread in with the sugar that it would absorb the moisture.
If it's in a large lump you could always try grating it!0 -
Put it in a plastic bag, wrap in a towel and beat the living whatsit out of it with a rolling pin or even a wooden spoon. Very theraputic too0

write them a stinker of a complaint letter...not just about the sugar, sounds like you've had more than enough reason to moan about them in the past.
you never know, might just get yourself a gift voucher or something!know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

Ive been meaning to do just this! I send substitutes back every week and they are supposed to credit my account with the cost of these but more often than not they make a mistake and don't credit me correctly. Its always too little and never too much for some reason! Im always having to ring up to get them to send me the correct money and its also an 0870 number which I think is a damn cheek when you are calling because they've made a mistake! So I want to complain about this also. Luckily I know to dial the alternative number on the "say no to 0870" website.
The service and the delivery men are excellent and it is so nice not having to struggle round the supermarket with a trolley and loading it into the car etc. It is just the subs I have trouble with. I have asked Sainsburys if they can not send me any subs at all, ever and then I won't have this problem but they say they can't do this!0 -
Just the way my mind works, but I'd be a bit worried about what liquid the sugar got wet with! There's no guarantee it was nice clean water... :eek:If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...0

So do Sainsbury not have an option for "do not substitute?" I've only ever used Tesco and with a couple of exceptions, always refuse substitutions as I can usually manage until I can get there to buy it myself. If that's the case, maybe I won't try Sainsburys - sounds like more trouble than it's worth -along with their late deliveries too.0

definatly go with the stinker of a complaint letter. They should be told if their service is not acceptable to you.
make sure you tell them you are opposed to 0870... numbers too.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0
