desperate cirumstances no boiler!

hello, we have a bad situation and cant seem to make it better. we have an old water tank that has gone beyond repair seriously damaging our back bedroom. the household insurance would not cover it as I had an ebay shop selling books and it was classed as buisness premises. we had a temp repair on but it has now gone again and is beyond any repair. we have only £100 spare cash and a credit rating of poor so are unable to get finance. our mortgage is norther rock, and they are not taking remortgages for repairs at present. none of our families and friends can help, we are not able to get anything from warmfront, orbitcare and repair or anywhere like that. in addition we only have one fire to heat the whole house and we have mold on the inside as well as bad electrics and a three year old toddler. we cannot out heaters on as fire has come out of the plugs in nearly all rooms. a local handyman has offered to repair everything for 1800 however we have no spare money so we applied for a crisis loan and have today been rejected as they dont fund that sort of thing. we are currently using an old tea urn to have baths (we dont have a shower) and this takes under 3 hours to get about 3 quarters of a bath. everywhere i turn we cant get help because we either work,in debt, or earn over 20,000. we cant turn the clock back to stop the debts although we are managing them ok but where do we go from here?

  • Hi,
we have an old water tank that has gone beyond repair

Do you mean a gas combi boiler / immersion hot water tank / or the plastic cold water tank?
the household insurance would not cover it as I had an ebay shop selling books and it was classed as buisness premises

    Arguable!

bad electrics and a three year old toddler
fire has come out of the plugs in nearly all rooms

Remove wall socket fuses from the consumer unit/fuse box immediately.

we cant turn the clock back to stop the debts

I would inform the unsecured creditors of the situation, and negotiate a lower repayment plan for a minimum of six months. This period will enable you to pay for essential maintenance.
If they don't agree, do it anyway.
If you have a repayment mortgage, pop onto an interest-only for 6 months. That should give you some money to do the work with.
Or, sell the house while its still standing!!

thanks for the posts we have moved onto an intrest only loan and we are paying the debts we owe, i tried not to negoitate further down as my mortgage term is up in 10 months and i have heard that it can effect your chances of a remortgage if you have debt management. the boiler is a really old make apparently one of the originals and we only found out that our incredibly large elec bills were due to it heating up constanlty. npower have finally reduced our bills from 163 a month to 70 so that gives a bit more to play with
  • Hi Milo,

From your quote, I think you may have an old fortic type combi tank (with 1 immersion heater at the bottom called a "direct combi boiler").
You can get these on ebay from around £200 depending on the dimensions of the cylinder. These are a doddle to fit, if your partner is good at d.i.y.

Your electrics need to be seen by an electrician ASAP. Though it does sound like you will need a rewire (as "fire" comes out of them!).

incredibly large elec bills were due to it heating up constanlty

Get a "heavy duty" timer from wickes for £12.

You seem like you are struggling anyway, if interest rates go up can you be sure you won't end up in a DMP in any case?

Did you inform your insurance co' that you kept "stock" at home?
Did you then try to claim on the insurance for "stock"?
I kept "stock" at my house for my business, however it was clear that these items would not be covered on my policy.
