Which trees for hedging?

Why not go for a mixed hedge & use hawthorn - jaggy, but kids & dogs get to know that, beech - which isn't evergreen, but keeps its leaves over the Winter - they turn a lovely russet colour, black thorn, stuff that gets berries that encourage wild life - feeds the birds?0

Been having a look online and I'm thinking of getting privet as I like a formal look, any tips for planting and maintaining please?0

The much maligned Leylandii provides a great formal looking evergreen hedge IF properly maintained.0

Trim it with hedge clippers.0

Catwoman- have you thought about Laurel. Laurel is evergreen with glossy leaves and very easy to maintain. We have a 6ft boundry laurel hedge, depth about 1 metre and about 15 feet long. You can even save yourself some money if you take cuttings from an established plant.I want a hedge to seperate us from our neighbours so want it to be dense but easy to trim and keep to 6ft. I want it to be evergreen and child and dog friendly, what should I use?

Sory Scottiedog, not child or pet friendly as required by OP, it is poisonous
"Almost every part of the common laurel is poisonous - bundles of crushed laurel leaves were used in ancient times to poison water supplies."

I've got golden and dark green alternate as a hedge. Looks quite good. If you were doing a long hedge 2 gold then 2 dark green would give a better effect.
It's a bit of a myth that they're high maintenance, twice a year with a hedgetrimmer is plenty and you won't have a massive amount of clippings. It's when people let them get away that the problems start.
Got mine from B&Q.0
