average utility bills for a four bedroom student house?

  • For a four person house semi detached house, it cost us around £30 a week each all in - gas, electricity, water, phone line and internet. I don't know if it was considerably more because three of us were English students and therefore always home and needed the heating on most of the day to combat the Yorkshire winter, so if you're not in the house all day it may well be lots cheaper.

Also check if you are allowed to change your utility providers and therefore possibly get a cheaper deal - our letting agents wouldn't let us do it and we had to stick with British Gas (who were the cheapest for us, but may not be for you). You may also be able to sell any internet equipment you buy back to the landlord, but again check first.

Student houses have high electricity bills as they normally all have computers on, plus light, televisions etc. Can't be helped.

I paid £85 for gas a month and £38 for electric. Overall we overspent on electric but underspent on gas. It was quite a big house with rubbish insulation though. (but we did all have energy saving lightbulbs). No dishwasher, but had a tumble dryer.

Blooming heck! we have just paid 24 each for the electric and gas combined. It all depends who you are living with and whether they are gas guzzlers. Using dryers and dishwashers put costs up tremendously! In all my 5 years at uni and 4 in sharing my biggest bill was 120 each for 5 of us over a winter 3 months where the heating was on full blast. It all depends what company you use too

It was a cold winter last year so its not really fair to compare. We've still got our heating in our poorly insulated house. We do about£50 a month on elci and naff all on the gas(without the heating on).
  • Hey

For a 4 person house with lots of big hungry computers and pretty poor insulation we spend about £60 total a month on electricity. Without heating last month we spent a whole £10 on gas (the standing charge was more than the fuel!) but this month it'll be about £25.

Looking at other people's bills these seem pretty cheap, I think we can put that down to having an energy monitor sitting in the living room for all to see, it has made us much more aware of the energy we're using! Get one.

Wish i could provide more concrete figures but i've only been here 2 months!

Have a look on the MSE articles in the utilities section for ways to reduce your bill, will save a fortune.

As was explained in a later post, that was the total price and not the price per person!
