Got a leak - somewhere

in Water bills
Hi.
My girlfriend and I had a water meter fitted in September (we bought the house in July), and in fairness, didn't check the readings until I got the first bill on last Monday. £200 for two months!
Turned the water off for a few hours and it didn't move. Took a reading before and after work, when there is nobody in the house, and it had gone up.
Guy comes to have a look this morning, and I was praying it was a faulty meter. No such luck. Got a leak somwhere. They are coming back within a fortnight to dig up the pavement. Hopefully the leak is there because then they have sort it out.
I'm feeling very worried about all this, so let's say the leak is on my property - how will they (whoever 'they' are) find it? Will they have to take up the floors and stuff?
Anyone got an idea how much this could cost me? Thanks

Technically any leak after the meter is your responsibility, although most companies will make one 'goodwill' repair of the water main from the meter to your house.
It is difficult to see where a leak of that magnitude(thousands of litres) could be without you having some symptoms.
Are you sure that you don't have a toilet leaking? Either the water running inside the bowl from a defective cistern or an overflow somewhere?0 -
Turn off the internal stop tap, if the meter is still spinning then its an external leak, if it is an internal leak then they will not fix it, thats something you will have to claim off your insurance.
Dont forget to ask for a leakage allowance form so you can claim it all back for the lost water0 -
You have taken the right actions to check. How much did it go up by?... Turned the water off for a few hours and it didn't move. Took a reading before and after work, when there is nobody in the house, and it had gone up.
One other thing to watch out for is the possibility of another supply being tapped off yours - obviously I have no idea of your situation to tell whether this is a realistic possibility.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
