Unauthorised Overdraft

My bank has let me draw up a huge overdraft of several thousand pounds that I didn't ask for. I am now paying whopping bank charges on it and I only work part-time. Now they are trying to sell me a 5 year loan to cover it. Do I have the right to complain?

You asked for it by drawing it.
  • I have banked with them for almost 30 years and EVERY time I go in for a meeting with them I tell them that I don't manage my money. Although I have drawn it, that's true, I didn't know it wasn't my money. I think it is underhand and I think they should have had the courtesy to ask me if I wanted to increase my overdraft.

Didnt ask for? You withdrew and spent the money didnt you?

They're trying to sell you a loan, possibly with a lower interest rate and no charges so are trying to help you.

And you want to complain, when it was obviously your terrible account management and massive overspending that is the root cause?

  • So you didn't check your statements, you didn't check your online banking, you spent THOUSANDS of pounds that weren't yours to spend, and you want to complain just because you warn them that you don't manage your money?

Can I ask why the h£ll you don't manage your money? I can think of only one plausible excuse that you could give here, and it is highly unlikely that is the answer you're going to give, so, time to wake up and smell the coffee..

I feel quite similar to this...I went to The White Rose today, whipped the card out 5 times and ended up spending about £120*!!!

(*£120 on Christmas presents from saving £50 a month since February, knowing I have £1,300 available in my account (including £1,000 untouched OD) and that I have budgeted for it...hhmmm...).

    To conclude; poor excuse.

    You must be joking right?

Try taking some reponsibility for your own actions and you may see what a stupid question you have raised.
