As many of you will know there is a problem for AOL users and call18866 - see the UK's cheapest home phones provider article.
Call18866 uses e-mail to communicate passwords, yet AOL blocks these making it difficult. I have been in touch with AOL to ask why below is its response.
In the meantime i suggest AOL members who want to use call18866, first set up a hotmail address.

" Hi Martin,
Just getting back to you on your query about call18866, and the fact that AOL is currently blocking its emails.
This is due to an automatic spam block being put in place, which occurs when we receive a certain volume of spam reports from our members about a sender of email. Legitimate companies that comply with the legislation on email marketing can of course be added to our whitelist but their networks have to comply with some basic security standards, as spam attacks often come from networks compromised by spammers/viruses.
One standard is called "reverse DNS" - basically a way of authenticating the sender. We cannot unblock a company without this enabled but it is a very simple change and beneficial to all parties. (except commercial spammers.....) We did speak with Call18866 previously in this regard but we have not heard from them. Our technical specialist is currently trying to get in touch with Call18866 again to offer his assistance.
Legitimate companies can be reported as spam simply because their unsubscribe procedures are not clear or sometimes subject lines look like spam. You can see more of our best practice guidelines at https://www.aol.co.uk/spam, which many e-commerce companies have found helpful in not getting blocked by ISPs and improving their customer communication.
While we are clearly keen to ensure that all legitimate email reaches our members, we are bound to act on our members behalf if they tell us that a source is spam, as they are the ultimate arbiter and under the law we are required to abide by opt-in requirements.
I hope this answers your query. We'll keep you updated on the situation.
Regards,
Communications manager, AOL UK"

You would think that 18866 would want to get this sorted but by the sounds of it they don't seem too bothered.0

I was obviously fortunate to have set up an account before they blocked it. However I do not receive the e-mails from 18866 telling me a bill is due for payment. This was overcome by Direct debit payments and since it is such a cheap phone service the bills are never much anyway. I am a little suprised that 18866 has not done something about it but I am very happy with the service they provide otherwise and get great satisfaction when telling other phone companies how little I pay.
Thanks Martin and 18866Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -
I have set up a hotmail address for my 18866 emails to go to, but TBH, hardly check. I occassionally log on to 18866 - every 4 weeks or so when I remember, but as I pay monthly (on my cc I believe) and the last bill was for 71p
I have to say I'm not too bothered. Would be nice if they got it sorted though, for all that.
Thanks Martin, you're saving me lots.
Now, if you could just source money-saving husbands or cheap conversion packages for a money-wasting variety, I'd be laughing. :rolleyes:0 -

I agree 18866 could do more. After my intervention it seems AOL is trying to resolve this - good for it. I provided them with my special access number to 18866 (took me weeks to get originallY) so fingers crossed all will talk to each other soon!Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.

why dont you just sign up for a yahoo/gmail account and fordward all the email to your AOL address?0

forward all the email to your AOL address
Interesting point Dave.
However, wouldn't the "from" address still show that it was from 18866 and therefore would still get blocked when it hit the AOL mail system?[ Eat, Drink and be Merry - for tomorrow we get the bill ]0 -

i'm with both and have no problem.
i have had a problem with other companies...like my accountants !!... where aol blocks their emails .... after many weeks and much frustrations trying to sort it with aol...which i couldn't ... someone told me that if you put the companies email address into your aol address book then it lets them in... i tried and it worked.0 -
