If I leave my desktop computer idol for about 20 minutes it switches itself off and will not come on again until I remove the plug and leave it out for a few seconds. It is not set to hibernate all the power settings are set to never.

Do you have power saving enabled in the BIOS?Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

I am not very technically minded so I am do not know how to check but it has only just started doing it and I have had it for 2 years.0 -
Maybe a system restore would help. Try rolling back to a time when you know it was working properly.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

Your power supply may be failing. Could you run this and tell us what voltages it shows?0

It is possible that your heatsink is choked with dust and the CPU is overheating. You can have a look inside to see if this is the case.
I have recently had 2 PCs that were shutting down because of this and 2 with dodgy power supply units so it could be either.
Here are some before & after heatsink photos:0 -
As above, but the PSU could be full of dust....
Also the graphics card/cooler/heatsink.
It's by far the most common cause of this fault, dust kills PC's.
Take the PC outside (it will make a lot of mess), remove covers and blow/hoover all the dust out.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I agree that dust can cause major problems in this respect, but surely that would be a constant problem? Millie says that it only happens when the PC is left idle for a while, and with power saving switched off.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

Does it also shut down if you use it for about 20 mins? If so then overheating is the likely cause. If not then it's something else.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Oh right :rotfl: I need to read posts in a bit more detail I think!
There's a chance that the BIOS has some power saving setting's, these can over-ride the settings in windows.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
