Organic veg box

Options
There was a thread on here that mentioned organic veg boxes but I can't find it, I've tried a search but, even though I've changed the search time to 300 days it doesn't seem to go back far enough  :-/

Anyway, has anyone used these? Are they any good? Which is the best one?  Are they cheaper than buying organic from the Supermarket?

I would like to go organic but I'm trying to find the cheapest best value way of doing this.

    Hi Galtizz,

I get my veg from Abel and Cole but depending where you are you can check the internet, just type something like organic vegetable box and the name of the city/area where you live.

You can also join the organic register of the Soil Association and do a search there, the registration is compulsory but free.

Hope this helps! If I find the link to the old thread I shall let you know.

  • I know for sure that at one time, that particular thread was moved to shop but don't drop as I recall seeing it on there after it was initially on here. However, I've just searched for it on there as well and couldn't find it :-/ sorry :(

We have an organic fruit and veg box delivered every fortnight, costs £14 but all very good and usable. It makes me think sometimes as have had mangoes to use and celeriac, it is always a bit of a surprise (this week got 2 pkts beetroot so need to think about how to use them up now! Any ideas anyone?

  • It can be baked or boiled and included in soups such as the famous Russian borscht, salads or pickled in vinegar. It can also be grated or diced and included raw, in salads. Mint, parsley and horseradish complement the flavour of beetroot particularly well.

Thank you for all the great ideas! I feel truly inspired now ;D Beetroot salad with the leftover quiche it is then with a starter of either beetroot soup or beetroot crisps and a dip!

Thanks for the info. the organic directory looks really useful and Able and Cole have such a wide choice.

Catzine, try Influx of beetroot or Chocolate beetroot cake sounds horrid but it is actually quite nice, the beetroot makes it really moist. Who delivers your box?

beetroot is nice boiled and cubed and eaten as a vegetable with something else.

my mum makes beetroot soup, but I have to confess that I think it is disgusting has an interesting taste. ;)

what about pickling it in a couple of jars? would that work?

Galtizz thanks for the recipe links lots of ideas there, will have to try the interesting chocolate beetroot cake recipe, too rich in eggs though do you think it would work with 2 eggs? Might try to substitute with soya flour and water as that works in vegan recipes, I'm not vegan (yet) but have trouble with eggs :(

I get my organic box from:-

r.mac I.m afraid I already have far too much pickled beetroot (but that is another problem! ;D but I will definately try using beetroot as a vegetable! Thank you!
