    Davidmt83 , don't be such a pratt

you have managed to turn what could have been a good thread into a list of childish objections and insults.

    here is a suggestion.
Stop posting on this thread and make your own ..there you could post all the information you have that is of use ,rather than just belittling someone else's efforts.

Good work OP ..I assist regularly a cluster of about 5 PC users who never do this kind of simple maintenance.
And anyone who does this regularly will enjoy a far less painful experience.

The only thing I would add is to check every know and then for dust and fluff blocking vents on the case ...especially on laptops

David - cool it! You're at risk of making yourself look like a complete @hole, which I'm sure none of us wants. The OP was trying to be (and succeeding in being) helpful.

At a guess, I'd say "Put the wine down, and step away from the keyboard" - but I could be wrong...

Well done David, you've managed to turn a helpful post into a slagging match.... no wonder this country is going to the dogs when people who try to help others get slated....

Bet the OP wishes he never bothered... just ignore him OP.

Post No4 reported BTW... really uncalled for!

    4/ File System Defragmentation

Last, but by no means least, is a defrag.

Over time hard drives get slower as Windows throws files wherever it likes.
A defrag is a simply reorganization of the filing system that is on your hard drive....

Defrag is run much, much faster when run in Safe Mode (continually hit F8 during boot-up).

    Once complete, simply re-boot.

Don't forget to clear out Temporary Internet files and Cookies BEFORE starting any maintenance (and regularly in any case).

Johnmc, this is part of ccleaner's remit anyway ;)

Thanks clearing your internet cache can also resolve quite a few connectivity issues.

Don't be confused by the low post count on this account, I've been around many years.....
  • I see no mention of a firewall there.. prevention is better than cure

If you can cope with the occasional nagging to upgrade to the 'not free' version, ZoneAlarm is pretty good - http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/anti-virus-spyware-free-download.htm
