AVG Free edition

I currently use AVG free edition 7.5, today I received a pop up from them saying it was due to run out and be deleted on 12/4 and that I should install the new better 8.5 edition for £30 odd pounds, however there is a bit to download the 8.5 free edition. My question is, when i click to download the free version it asks if I want to run it or save it? im really not techy at all and dont wanna muck it up...thankyou for your help x

It doesn't really matter which option you check. After saving a pop up will ask do you want to install now.

I would suggest you click save and put it somewhere like \downloads should you ever need to re-install it.

  • When you select the run option, it actually downloads to a temporary directory and then installs. Whilst save it means you will save the binary file and then double click on the icon and install from where it was saved. I always save, if there is a problem with the run installation, you will have to go back to the website again to install, rather than have the file already available on your hard disk to install again

I swapped from AVG 7.5 a while ago on reading consistent recommendations here for alternative free programmes.
If you do a search on this forum for Anti virus programmes you can figure which if any you're interested in.
I went to Avira and so far so good. Every one says AVG is resource hungry and I certainly find things load up much more quickly now I've got rid of AVG.
I guess what I'm saying is you dont need to go onto the NEW AVG (8 or 8.5) just because .
If I find any problems with Avira i shall try Avast.
Dont regret changing one little bit.:T

Sounds interesting. Can you say how you know it has better detection rates?

I uninstallted AVG after reading this forum, and replaced it with Avast.

After reading this thread it would seem Avira is the favoured one now:confused:

So should I get rid of Avast and install Avira?

    Thanks

Avira is definitely the better anti virus scanner
But it doesnt scan email attachments (So save them to the desktop THEN open them so Avira DOES scan them)
Avira also scans the drives a LOT quicker

Entirely upto you really. I personally use Avira (I find Avast a bit too 'bloaty' and slow going)

At the end of the day its your call.
