  • Hmmm. It doesn't sound like it's a firewall issue, otherwise you'd not be able to get online when hardwireded in. Have you started the laptop up with the wireless card all plugged in etc? Perhaps it's not recognising it as a connection?

Do you get a connection with anything, i.e. different browsers or email or even ping? Can't think of anything else - is the router/modem set up properly and you're definitely connecting to it, not next door or something ;-)

Are you able to connect wirelessly to other networks on your laptop, i.e. at work or in a cafe? Working that out will narrow it down a little.
  • i can connect to other networks near to me but always says i am working offline.outlook express says i am offline as well.
  • I had that problem with my lap top, it kept thinking I wasn't connected and when I tried to connect the dial up dialogue box would appear.

I had to set the wireless connection as the default and set the dial up connection to "never dial connection" before it would work.

It took a bit of fiddling for me to work this out, but got there in the end!

I am having this type of problem too. Does nayone know if it could it be that the signal isn't strong enough? Our main computer is downstairs but I want this to work upstairs.

The best way to prove if it is a range issue, is to move the PC next to the router, if it works there, then it is a range issue. If not, it is a configuration issue, or faulty hardware:

This may also help diagnostics, as it shows signal strength:

  • Have you checked that the encryption on your router and the encryption on your wi-fi card are set to the same setting?

Thanks to you and Older but Wiser.
I now know that the signal strength is low. We have 3com wireless router not Belkin as I thought:confused: ! Do you know the best way, if any, that I can increase the signal strength please..........................?

I sent an email to their technical department and would you believe they replied almost immediately!
They said to make sure the router has the last firmware, the wireless PC has the latest driver and also it all depends on what Operating System we are running on the system. Last thing they said was change the channel in the router wireless setting until you get good signal strength.

Now for a few dumb questions!
    What's firmware
By operating system do they mean Windows XP etc?
    Thanks.
  • firmware is the software built-in to the router, look on the website for a firmware update, download it, and you usually install it by going into the config screen of your router, and clicking firmware upgrade or something similar.

yes o/s is xp, 98, 2000, me etc..
