Ebuyer has a 1TB Toshiba external hard drive for £70.:T
But the Maxtor / Seagate equivalents which are in the £90+ range come with a 5 year warranty.

Which would you buy?
Thanks in advance

I've heard a lot of bad things about the freeagents with heat issues, so I personally wouldn't buy one of those.
It's all well and good having a 5 yr warranty, but if you lose your data, it's gone. I doubt the warranty included data recovery.0 -

What about the Maxtor?0 -
Samsung Spinpoint F series would be top of my recommendation list, terrific drives IMO. I've used 3 F1s recently (320 to 500) the FDT is the one you'll need for 1000Gb, gets rave reviews, runs at 7W, covering 1Gb over 3 platters. 124MB/sec read, bust speed 237MB, you should be able to get it for under £80.
My second choice would be the WD Caviar SE16, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 is ok, but the 7200.10 is much slower.
oops edited to add, you are talking about external drives! My recommendations are for internal SATA drives
However you can wrap an USB 2 enclosure around these for a top notch external drive - just make sure it has adequate cooling.

the 5 year warranty is only on the functionality of the hdd. if you want it for just extra storage then buy a toshiba or Western digital drive. however for backups and important things DVD's are the best bet.
Alternatively you can quite easily look online and get yourself a USB enclosure for a SATA drive and then buy an OEM HDD from ebuyer, etc and put it together yourself. a decent "caddy" will go a long way.
avoid maxtor like the plague. their casings tend to harbour heat!
hope this helpsScrimping and saving!0 -
I'm using it as backup and for media files which are too big to store on my PC.I would buy the Toshiba and either use it daily, keeping it backed up to two 500 GB drives, or use it sparingly as the back up for two 500 GB drives that are in daily use.
I'm buying one and will use it in the latter fashion because my 500 GB drives have Firewire 800 ports, which makes them better for daily use.
The Toshiba drive has only USB2 - so it's better for non time-critical data transfer.
The most important thing is not to use it as the sole repository of your data: a terabyte would be a hell of a lot of data to lose if (when, eventually) the drive fails.0 -
I have 3 seagates, my dad has one and my grandfather has one
All been fine
Ive had 2 maxtor internal hard drives fail on me though:idea:0 -

I was recommended a Barracuda internal drive when I was looking a little while ago, and it has been faultless over the last 6 months or so. Lots of reviews praised it, but that was 6 months ago. Lots of things will have changed in that time!0
