Avoiding repossession, MSE tip number 21

A man deliberately cut off his own head with a chainsaw because he did not want to give up his repossessed home, an inquest has heard.

David Phyall, 50, used string to tie the Black & Decker power tool to a leg of a snooker table in his sitting room. He then taped up the on button and plugged it into a timer. When it started, it sliced three-quarters through his neck and into his right shoulder, only stopping when his T-shirt was dragged into the blades.

Police were called and, after breaking in, Sergeant Mark Carter said he found Mr Phyall in his sitting room, with blood spattering the walls, floor and a cabinet.

Coroner Simon Burge said to the officer: "It must have been a huge shock to you." Sgt Carter replied: "In some ways it was, sir."

Yes, but this wasn't a case of repo for mortgage default, but because the housing association wanted to demolish the flats. He had refused alternative accommodation on several occasions, was the only person left in the condemned 60s block and considered mentally ill.

Gruesome stuff. However, there will be many less dramatic, but nonetheless equally sad stories that don't make Sky News simply because the cause of death is less inventive. And those will be people who, genuinely, will have nowhere left to turn.

Extraordinary what people will do when they get upset. It's only money, after all. There was that chap who shot his family then set fire to the house. Is this a sign of an overly-materialistic society?

OTOH I knew a really nice solicitor, who got repossessed in the last house price crash. He said it was the best thing that happened to him, as he lost his house but found Buddhism.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I think its more a case of a society in which some people never experience failure, until the fateful day when their empire comes crashing down. Then, they don't know how to deal with it.

From the cradle, we now have 'targets' and, while many able children meet them easily, this is not so for all. So some kids are introduced early on to failure, and for many that becomes their expectation.

For the remainder, there's a number who go on from success to success, and that can lead to feelings that they are all-powerful. They become control freaks who, although they think they are running the show, define themselves very much through the approval of others. It is just too much when it all goes wrong and they can't match up to others' expectations.

That's my take on it, but since wealth is equated with success, I agree with you too. For some, however, like entertainers, the money alone is not enough.

Why do I find this so funny?

Perhaps because it's so awful, & this seems so understated. Perhaps because it reminds me, somewhat, of Rhinocratic Oaths.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

If you want to look at what is wrong with society have a look how you react to these people. Any sypathy, compassion?

Lack of people to turn to and a bunch of idiots who love to rub salt in their wounds.

I think what drives you to suicied and muder your own family is more than getting "upset".

Do your views compound what is wrong with society yes as you don't care:rolleyes:

Rant over suicied and murder are not things to celebrate so grow up some of you.

Anybody else get the impression the OP didn't read the whole story before posting? Its a very sad state of affairs when someone feels this is the only option left to him/her, whatever the circumstances.

Having attended mortgage repossessions, in the past, that have resulted in suicides, I hope to God I don't attend one again.
  • amcluesent, I think you should change the title of the thread. This isn't a laughing matter. I think issues like this should be discussed, but the levity implied by the title is totally wrong given the context of the OP.

A chainsaw isn't even a decent way of killing yourself! It's right up there with kicking yourself in the balls till you die of internal bleeding/shock.
